Switch to Alchemy, or stick with LeatherworkingFollow

All right, I am a Shaman, and I chose leatherworking because I really didn't figure it would matter that much (I was new, and I didn't play any beta versions). But now, being level 47, I see very little use in my leatherworking. At the moment all I use are the kits I make, because I really can't make anything worth while for my level.

I think that Alchemy would probably of been a better choice for me, as at least I would have a stock of potions at my disposal then, and powerful Flasks to use later on.

But I have put so much work into my leatherworking already (250 leatherworking, 300 skinning, and a lot of bought recipes), so I don't really know if I should abandon that work or not.

The only reason for me to keep leatherworking other than the fact that I'd be throwing away a lot of hard work otherwise, is for my guild to have a Dragonscale leatherworker in their ranks, and that is not too great of a reason.

Is it time consuming to restart a profession? Or totally worth ditching leatherworking? All opinions are welcome. :)

I made this switch early and I am really thankful I did. I had little to no luck in seling anything that I made and I knew that once I dinged 40 I would be using mail. I also heard from several that the elemental, dragonscale and other leathers were basically worthless. I ditched it for Alchemy/herbalism. I am glad I did. I am making pretty good money now, especially from healing potions. I spend 1 g on 20 liferoots and I can make a nice amount of healing potions that I can sell for like 75silver per shot. So after selling 2 of them I made my money back and I still have about 4 stacks left. Not to bad. Plus you count manna potions and potions of fortitude (which sell for much more) you have a cash cow. Alot of times the regents are hard to find/time consuming to find so I will buy them at the AH and then sell the potions to make the money back+profits.

at higher levels Alchemy makes a ton of dough since you are the only one that can transmute stuff. That is a very nice ability to have and if you are part of a guild they will like that alot. Especially the engineers.

what you could do, is keep skinning (since it's a great money maker) and drop leatherworking and get alchemy. Use the money from skinning to buy regeants.

I could also suggest to you Tailoring. Think about this, it allows you to make alot of high money items (bags) and all the drops come from human mobs that can be farmed. Seriously, all you need to do is just sit for a few hours killing razomanes or humans or dwarfs and before you know it you will have more silk, linen and wool than you can handle. At higher levels mooncloth and mageweave drop from the mobs so you get all the materials that you need from that. Looking back now, I think tailoring is one of the best professions you can get. EVERYONE needs bags, not to mention you don't have to worry about buying them ever. If you have skinning, you don't have to worry about the occasional leather that the recipies call for.

ON second thought...that is my suggestion, Skinning and Tailoring.

Plus, you can make snazzy red shirts for your guy that look great.

I think once you are at a high enough level you can level the trades a lot easier. So you can go back and find herbs without being harassed by mobs. Plus you should now have enough money to easily buy stuff off the AH and create items a lot quicker.
About Herb/Alch over Skin/Leath I have leatherworking and I plan on keeping it till I am level 40 (I am a hunter). At that point I am not sure what I will take but from what I hear Hunters don't get anything worthwile after level 40. I haven't ever had Alchemy but I wouldn't mind all the buffs from potions.
So in closing you should be able to drop your skills and pick up new ones and level them quickly. It is all a matter of preference if you want to change.

I dropped leatherworking and went with tailoring at about level 28, and with the money that you make at whatever level you are, it seems that it's not all that much fuss to get up to about the same skill level of a new trade as with your old one, and I am now a higher-skilled tailor (210 presently) than I was a leatherworker before - and bags are on everyone's must-have list.

I stuck on to skinning, which is a good money-maker, and when grinding for leather or cloth, you do get decent xp, green drops and the occasional blue that gives you extra cash.
