Enchanting switch?Follow

Okay, a few things I've noticed. for my first 50 levels I've been a happy skinner/tribal leatherworker. However, my LW skill has recently stalled out at 266, since it seems all the patterns yellow and above either require a bunch of wildvine or a ton of feathers/scales, etc.

Also, I've been getting my hands on a lot of useless (to me) green items and whatnot.
Lastly, I've seen higher enchantments going for up to 30-40g each.
Does it seem worth it to drop skinning and/or leather to pick up enchanting?

Any input from enchanters or people who've made a high level switch would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a lev 38 and just made the switch to enchanting myself.
Here's my experience- it's tough
Enchanting, like many trade skills, is tough to get started in. When you first start off (up to skill lev 50) you can get the points from disenchanting. So your first 30-40 green items will help you skill up. Yes, you heard right... 30-40 green items. You'll need to find a low lev craftsman like a tailor or blacksmith to make green items for you at a cost of 10-25s in raw materials. (so about 5G so far)

Next, your low lev enchants are useless. You can't even give them away. +5 health to bracers? nobody cares. +5 mana to chest? nada. +1 str to bracers? can't give it away unless you have guildies who need it. Even a +2dmg to 2h weapons - which requires a shard (either a random low % disenchant from a green or requires a blue) won't get you a buyer willing to pay anything.

So... you end up enchanting the same bracers 25 times to skill up. I'm up to 105 so far with loads of cash sunk and guildies helping me with crafted items. Unless you have oodles of gold to spend at the AH buying the disenchanted esseces, dusts and shards it will take quite a bit of farming and crafting.

Also, the really pricy enchants are ones requiring formula drops. These alone can go for 10-25G...plus the cost of leving up... plus the cost of the raw goods. The amount that people charge for icy chill is not a huge profit center.

Was it worth the switch? uh... maybe. Sometimes its fun farming a low lev instance for green items. Will you make money at it? Doubt it.

This is just an observation I made of a guildmates enchanting experience. He has been in my guild since day one and I never knew he was an enchanter until he hit level 50. He never mentioned it. He maxed out tailoring about the same time he hit 50 and it was then that he stated he would like to begin his enchanting. Well it was funny at first but it turns out he was able to blaze through to max enchanting in less than 4 weeks. In earlier levels most istance drops were needed by others and he was also in need of money from the drops he received but now he was able to solo farm most lower instances and with a little guild help farm maraudon.

He probably would have been better served to carry a 2nd gathering profession until level 50 and then changing instead of holding onto enchanting and not using it but in the end it worked out quite well. Also, it seems that most of his high level tailoring patterns disenchant into nice usable items which helped in the power leveling as well.
