Right now my fishing skill is around 170 and i'm fishing in menithril bay. I seem to gain every 4th fish i pull. Is this normal...should i go to a higher level area to gain faster?
Does it matter where you fish for gains or does it just get harder to gain the higher your skill gets?

This is normal because the higher the lvl of fishing the more fish you need to reel-in! However, you can go to a higher lvl area but most of the fish will get away so you will need to use a lure. It is up to you where you fish but for me i need to pull up 6-8 fish before I lvl. GL!

I'm in the same situation. My skill is at 152, and I get very few bumps fishing from Menethil. (1 in 6 sounds about right.) But when I was fishing in Booty Bay yesterday, I caught all of one fish in about 20 casts. And I did not get a bump. I DID, however, get a bump while fishing from Auberdine, however. I guess that means that you can get a bump from just about anywhere, as long as you catch enough fish.

Well after some experimenting...it seems that it does'nt matter where you fish. You can get to 300 fishing in newbie areas.
The only "secret" is to fish in area's so you catch a fish every time as you can only gain by catching things, and you have to catch more fish between each gain as your fishing skill level increases. So avoid the "the fish got away" message by moving to an easier zone or using lures to boost fishing skill for fastest skill gains.
