Leatherworking for Hunters!Follow

#1 Mar 01 2005 at 1:23 PM Rating: Decent
There has been lots of posts about which leaterworking skill is beneficial to which classes and I have read them. But there seems to be a difference of opinion about which specialization, Elemental or Dragonscale is better for hunters. So what I would like to ask is mainly to the hunter - leatherworkers out there. Which specialization did you choose and why? Is one better for hunters who try to stay ranged and have their pet tank? And is one better for hunters who melee alot? Thanks for your help and advice.

I'd like to know this too! I'm almost at the skill cap and lvl 38 I already know tribal is out since it's more caster friendly. I mostly stay at range but mix it up rfom time to time any advice on which path to take?

I recently dumped LW in favor of Herb/Alchemy. Once you get your complete Tough Scorpid set (helm is the last piece, requiring lvl 45 and LW 250), there is, IMO, nothing else good for hunters in the profession.

If you want to keep it, though, you can go one of two routes: Elemental or Dragonscale. (Tribal is geared towards Druids, so you can ignore that one.) Here's a brief synopsis of each.

Elemental:
Pros - Good AGI buffs, good for ranged fighting
Cons - It's leather, so the Armor Rating is lower than mail; Quest is difficult to complete, and materials for the items are even harder to get

Dragonscale:
Pros - High Armor Rating (mail); Black Dragonscale pieces have Attack Power buffs, good for melee fighting
Cons - Nothing with AGI buffs; There are only four known pieces of Black Dragonscale armor, so you're stuck buying/looting the rest; Quest is difficult to complete, and materials for the items are even harder to get

When it comes down to it, Elemental is really best for Rogues, while DS is really best for Shaman. Blizz has stated the Black DS pieces are designed for Hunters, but if that's true, they did a poor job. Most Hunters will tell you to go for "Monkey" armor after the Tough Scorpid set. You get the AGI buffs offered by Elemental, with the AR of the DS pieces. It may be expensive and/or hard to find, but if you use the time you would have spent on the LW quests, you can easily make enough money to pay for a full set of "Monkey" armor.

its really bad that blizzard has no specialization for hunter
DS - shaman
tribal - druid
ele - rouge

maybe a 4th specialization may come or blizzad will add more recipes to dragonscale.
Cause the hunter was added later to wow.
And hunters still dont have any hunter quests ( only the lvl 10 taming quest)
so im quite optemistic when they add hunter quest they will also add some recipes for hunters :>

I hope your right. Hunters are the least favored class in my opinion. When will Blizzard make things more suited for us? I don't know, but I hope they hurry.

Grimlie,

The Dragonscale specialization fit my character.

I am a pet hunter. I use Pickles my pet to tank for me. But as I reach higher and higher levels, I find that melee combat occurs more and more. To that end, I need a higher level of armor and a higher level of melee stat boosts.

To that end, I have used the Dragonscale to provide me with the bonus armor and magic resistance I need to hunt dragons and other high end monsters.

Also due to the lack of high end Dragonscale production, I've found my character has a unique appearance. This is something I find very important.

I hope my observations have helped.

LeatherWorking really has nothing suitable for any type of hunter past the tough scorpid gear, and even then who needs spirit? The only crafted piece of gear I wear at lv58 is a Wicked Leather Headband, and only then because of it's attributes... I have yet to find a helm to replace it (still looking)

Hopefully, Blizz adds something to benefit this class a bit more... as, well... none of the crafting skills really offer anything comparable to a good drop that any min-maxing hunter would equip... =\

Elemental is better for melee and ranged i believe because it tends to give your armor (leather) agility and strength... And im not sure what the other is good for sry.

The question is: I arrived to level 30 and skinning is pretty high with leatherworking on the way. Is it worth it, since I will be changing to chain at 40?

Why not change at around 35 and start building on mining/blacksmithing? Any opinions?

The question I have, is there an Artisan Leatherworker trainer any where else besides Darnassus? It's going to become a pain if everytime I need to level up I have to travel all the way back there.

Lotta good input here. I went to Dragonscale because my dream is to have all 3 pieces of the black dragonscale gear. 'Why?', you ask? Because it just sounds cool.....No really, +144 attack power, +31 fire resistance. How many high lvl dragon ppl are out there that use fire damage? Ever since i hit 49, i've seen them all over the place, so why not get some protection while boosting your attack?

Another mis-conception that ppl have is that hunter is 'shooting only'. OMFG ppl, we can train in multiple awesome weapons and have 2...3 special attacks to use in melee including an aspect to dodge better and all of a sudden hunters can't look past their guns? I know, I know, I know...who the hell is this commin in tryin to talk like he knows everything? Lemme give ya bit of my history: I started out hunter with the holy grail knowledge that i had to absolutely boost AGI and i must put ever spec point into Marksmanship. So 45 levels, thats all i did and my crit/mort shots reached 800-1200 pts of damage almost and average of once per fight, BUT my normal shots never went above 160pts on an even leveled mob. So i decided to go against the grain and boost +Atk Power items over AGI and now at level 53, i average 180-220pts of damage per normal shot with a balance of +170 in +Atk Power items and +120 in AGI. I will admit that i rearely see the awesome crit/mort shots that i once had, but i hit alot harder and i kill alot faster.

I know we're not tanks and we're not meant to stay in close range at all times, BUT the times that we do melee are not far and few between. Every other class seems to hold the misconception that if you get a hunter at close range, the hunter is helpless....kinda funny when they see my 300-400 point raptor strike lay into them before the 100 pt wing clip dazes them long enough to get me away from them and pumping shots again.

Some ppl tend to think that boosting attack power only effects melee combat and its not that specific. It boosts both ranged and melee attack power. You may not crit as often as you like, but you will hit harder and steadier. So in closing, yes, i think Dragonscale is the best choice for the leatherworking hunter. Tribal and elemental are great, but meant to aid other classes.

I'm currently lvl 40 and 235 skill in LW. When I finish the Wild Leather quests (busy trying to farm a buttload of turtle scales) I plan to go Tribal simply because there are 3 leatherworkers in my guild. One has already gone Elemental and the other has already completed the Dragonscale quest. Just figured I'd fill in the gap for the guild.

I am sneaking on lvl 45 and my LW is 254. I have been reading numerous threads and so far none of the specialty routes seem worth it for a hunter. I just finished my tough scorpid set and I am very impressed with both the stat boosts and AC increase. I truely hope they make another route (giant scale or such) that is truely fitting to the hunter. Till then I'll save my choice on specializing and just finish the wild leather series.
