Just a quick question.

I'm currently at 200 skinning but I am only level 22 and now have the choice do I upgrade to artisan level?

Would there be any benefit to this or is this only so I can skin higher-level mobs? If so at what level should I think about going artisan?

Ringer,

As I recall I think your skinning is going to cap at level 225 or 250. Really you could stop training in skinning at that point if you like. You can skin any creature with a level of 1/2 your skinning skill. At your level you'll be able to skin just about everything.

I should mention though that I am just speculating. I've never actually seen information on how skinning skill directly affects what creatures you can skin.

I have however made it a personal goal to reach 300 in both my crafts (skinning and leathercrafting).

I hope this has helped more than its hindered.

Skinning you can skill up in to 225 where you'll need to pay for next tier, to allow skilling up to 300. And I believe you have to be lvl 40 to get to that last tier in this tradeskill. (note: most tradeskills are like this, for 225-300 you need to be level 40)

With skinning you can skin up to your skill in skinning divided by 5. So at 300 skinning (300 / 5 = 60) you can skin level 60 creatures.

At 100 skinning, level 20 creatures.
200 skinning, lvl 40 creatures.
etc.

So for someone who's level 22 with 200 skinning, the answer to your question is you can wait until you're higher level before spending the money to get to the Master level (225-300). You probably wont be finding monsters that give you skill until you gain more levels anyway. And the types of leathers/hides you get out of monsters does NOT improve with more skill in Skinning, its dependent soley on the leve of the creature.

Hope this clears things up.

I don't think you need to be level 40 to get artisan skinning.

I'm currently a level 34 hunter with 254 skinning. All I did was pay the training fee.

While I understand the point you were trying to make (i.e. 300 skinning won't get you thick leather off of sickly deer), if you don't have high enough skinning, you can't get some of the upper eschelon materials (from corpses left to rot by wasteful higher levels when possible).

If I'm level 15 and somehow successfully make it to 225 skinning (well, I'm 28 with 225 now anyhow), and I could also somehow survive the journey to a hunting ground with mobs that are being killed but not slain, and are significantly above my skinning level, then it is conceivable that I might want to have 300 skinning, in order to get those materials, however unlikely that whole scenario is.

Gathering skills have no level cap at level 10 you could have 400 skinning, just like mining. I did get my lvl 30 to mine some thorium hehe. Good Luck.

Skinning does have a level cap in the sense that you would have to kill monsters at levels much higher than you to raise it. If you can get skinning to 400 I would pay gold to find out how you did it. Also it isn't actually possible to get skinning to 300 at level 20 you would have to be around level 40+ to raise it that high. It wouldn't do any good till that level anyway.
