I saw that magic yellow dot that said "true silver" and my heart started pounding, i carefully weaved in and out around some prowling ogres and climbed the small mountain to my prize. I took a moment to wonder at this rare sight and quickly checked the surrounding hill for ogres that could annoy me...good...all clear. I sunk my pickaxe into the rich vein and had almost extracted a good size chunk of ore when a massive ogre club pounded me in the back. Annoyed at the interuption to my glorious task i proceeded to pummel the ogre into the snow only to turn back and see the node vanish as a "noble" paladin finished her destardly task.
So its back to the endless search for the true ore in the greed laced hills of alterac.

Welcome to the wonderful world of mining. I've had the same thing happen to me several times and I know how ticked you get. Don't become a vein stealer though. What I like to do when mining an area where there is someone mining is help them kill that ogre that just jumped on them and then let them have the vein. You'd be surprised how appreciative people are when you do this. I'm hoping more of this will happen on my server when they see it done and soon there will be very little of the "vein stealers".

I dislike people who generalize everyone who plays a specific class due to the actions of one player.

Oh, and I sympathize with the OP. I've had that happen to me many times.

Hey I had a similar story except I had a good resolution...

So I'm running through badlands (at level 40), looking for mithril on my newly bought skeletal horse (yes, I'm undead). I run across a mithril mine. So I start mining it, get one ore.. cool, keep going..

all of a sudden I'm ambushed by a paladin! (lvl 50 or so). He interrupts my mining and goes on to mine himself, while I run scared... Thankfully my warlock buddy interrupts his spellcasting and starts running,

so while he's getting killed by the the pally and his 4 lvl 50s buddies, i proceed to mine the ore dry! Then, my buddy is dead and the gang is about to kill me..

i proceed to point and laugh at the pally as i die gracefully.

mission well done.

Its worth noting that you never get more than one skillup from mining a node, but multiple people can get skillups from the same node. A little talking and sharing, and both people come out happy, at least from a skillup sense, and thats been the hardest part on my miner. if you get the first hit, you can keep the window open and offer to let someone else take a turn, they will often be very happy for it.

I have never managed to gain points from the same thing as others weather it be mining or skinning - it only ever seems to be one person who get sthe skill.

Does it require good timing or anything else?

I’m certain every miner in the game has experienced this at one time or another. I certainly have. It’s best to just blow it off and move on. Dwelling on it will only get you more upset without changing the situation. But as others have posted, it doesn’t have to always be that way.

I spent a great deal of time, about eight levels, killing the ogres near Southshore with my paladin. I was grinding out levels trying to get to level 40 and my new mount. In the process I also leveled my mining to over 250, in spite of the fact that most of the server, including both factions, seemed to go there to mine ore. As mithril became green and it became harder and harder for me to gain skill, I decided to do something wild and crazy. When I raced up to a node and found someone already mining it, I would ask if I could take a swing for the possible skill point. To my complete surprise almost every single time I was allowed to do so. I never took any of the ore, as you don’t need to for skill. I’d just swing and back off. I gained a lot of points that way.

Perhaps people were willing to help me with my mining skill because I often helped people in the area with heals and/or killing adds. Perhaps people were willing to share their node because I actually took the time to ask permission instead of just rushing up and jumping their claim. Or maybe I just managed to find a lot of nice people. But whatever the reason, I greatly enjoyed my time there because of the incredible people I encountered.

We will always encounter jerkes. There’s no escaping that. But there are also a lot of nice people in game. Try to focus on them instead. And also try to be like them. You can make other players very happy just by showing them a small kindness.
