Does mining skill affect any other aspect of mining apart from being able to mine a particular ore?
Has anyone noticed a larger drop of gems or faster mining rate when mining 'lower' grade ore bodies when your mining skill is substantially greater.
And are the enchantments for increasing mining, herb & fishing skill by 1-2 worth anythin or do they just raise skill by 1-2 points (ie useless enchant).

Your mining skill has absolutely no effect on your chances to dig up gems. An official blue post on the WoW forums stated that in no uncertain terms. When a node spawns it either has gems in it or it doesn’t. No amount of skill, or lack thereof, will change that. The only thing higher skill will do for you is to allow you to mine higher level ores and thus have a chance at digging up higher level gems.

Actually these enchants are useful for raising enchanting skill cheaply. I agree that the lower versions are not worth much to gatherers.
