Is dropping skinning valid for end game?Follow

Currently, I have been using the auction house to supplement my growth in leatherworking instead of just farming. The prices seem rather reasonable, and also its allot easier to get hides from AC than waiting for them on my side. With my current purchase to farm ration being at least 70:30 I was wondering wether its valid to drop skinning end game and just buy all my supplies instead.

True, this will cost more, agreed... but with a secondary skill of enchantment, its seems that this is more of a positive combonation...

What do you guys think?

I’m not even close to 60, but if your willing to be at the mercy of the AH for leatherworking supplies and you would enjoy enchanting more than skinning then I’d say go for it. The worst that could happen is that you find out you don’t like your choice as much as you thought you would and you choose to relearn skinning. For a level 60 character this shouldn’t be a problem, just time consuming. With skills like cooking, alchemy or leatherworking you’d have to buy all your recipes/formulas again. But all you lose by dropping skinning is skill.

got to remember who is probably the buyers of these skins...maybe some high level person with plenty of more of gold than time, even if he can go out and kill stuff easily to get the hides.

you may be this person, so it's perfectly valid to just get your supplies from the AH and use your time and other skill slot on something else.

like calabar says, also make sure that leatherworking and enchanting is the combo you want but you may not know until you do it.

there is also the option to create an alt character and put other desired trade skills on that one, without losing your skinning skill.

I am 60 druid, 300 skinning 300 elemental leatherworking.

The ONLY reason I skin anything anymore is because some guildie needs leather for whatever reason or there is a beast corpse in my way that I want to be rid off.

Once I get a Blood of the Mountain from BRD I plan to take up enchanting (like you mentioned) and make myself that Soulbound trinket, then drop that and end with engineering. Enchanting isn't something I'm personally interestd in as a profession, because usually the only way to get worthwhile materials for the high end stuff is from instance raids. This leads to other party members passing so you can disenchant and end up owing people free enchantments. ^_^

Otherwise, there isn't much else to fill the gap that wouldn't require you to drop your main profession as well (Leatherworking). You can sell the leather for cash once you break 300 and make a tidy profit, or just make lots of crap for your guild.

I would not give up skinning, in my opinion. There are so many crafts (tailoring, blacksmithing, leatherworking) that require leathers that it will always be profitable...even moreso if people start dropping the skill. In an hour I can obtain up to 80 leathers without even trying (ie. I do not farm for leather, I just kill mobs and many just happen to be skinnable) which can earn you a few gold at the least for higher level leathers. I also use my leathers to supply my alts, supply guildies or make items for friends/guildies. In the end, I guess you have to choose the skills/crafts that will compliment that which you readily have available to you through your friends and guildmates.

If you plan on going for dragonscale leather working it is basically mandatory to have skinning. The dragon scales sell for upwards of 1g each and many of the recipies require 10-30 of them. Now I suppose if you really want to pay that much and wait until someone else puts them on the AH, go ahead. But I would not advise it.

Sacravia,

Giving up the craft huh? Well you certain can, but I think you'll find that the supplies offered at the auction house aren't as abundant.

My skinning is at 300 and my crafting at 255. And I have to say that besides for spare coin I usually don't skin and take the items to the auction house anymore. The time to make the trip just isn't worth it anymore. The price of selling leathers just hasn't been worth it.

Before you change your mind and drop the skill give it up for a week or so. See how well you fair without it. If you discover that your doing fine without it. Drop the skill. But if you find that the cost is reasonable and more importantly the supply is readily available I'd say go for it.
