Some advice on making and selling neededFollow

Okay, this is the set.

I'm a NE Druid with Leatherworking and Skinning as professions. You can check my lvls here as they tend to increase from time to time ;)

My problem is this. I seem to be the only person actually losing money by selling stuff in the Auction House.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but people won't buy my stuff, not even when the buyout price is very low.

People are always saying "Put it in the AH, it WILL get sold and buyout is your friend", but apparently not my friend. Problem is that if you don't start your professions early on, you won't be able to compete with the high lvl crafters.

As I write this my Skinning/Leatherworking lvls are 150/105 and I'm just starting to make things like Fine Leather Tunics and Light Leather Pants. They have some pretty decent low lvl stats, but require Fine Thread, Cured Light Hide and Light Leather.

I can buy all this, but it costs more than I would make from selling the armor. Since I'm a Skinner, it would be great if I could actually gather it myself. I just can't seem to find any good spawn points/mobs. From a day's killing and skinning I get perhaps 40-50 Light Leather, 10 Medium Leather, but only 3 Light Hides.

Now, my question is, what can I make as a 100+ Leatherworker that is most economic (either by low production cost or high sell value)? And how the devil do I make a good auction?

If there are any players out there with some good spawn locations for the various ressources, a list or something would be very nice

Any advice is appreciated.

Sin,
Chaz

Well, this is certainly not going to be what you want to hear but here it is anyway:

Vendor the stuff you make raising skill.

Both of my rogues are skinners/leatherworkers (Cam's skinning is 202, leatherworking is 164; Muriel's skinning is 201, leatherworking 206). What I learned from levelling Muriel is that most of the items I make are only useful to enchanters (for disenchanting) because the price I would need to charge to make even a slim profit makes it either too high for appropriate level characters or the items don't compete with better dropped loot being dumped on the AH. This is a similar problem young smiths run into as well. So when I started levelling Camryn, I basically sold all the leather I got from skinning and when I was raising skill, I either sold the product to vendors or if it was green (like Hillman's Shoulders), I'd send it to my mage to be disenchanted.

Hides come more often when your skill is higher AND when you're skinning higher level creatures. In an average night in Duskwood (fighting black ravagers and worgen), I can walk away with 12-18 medium hides and 20 or so light hides, in addition to the common light/medium leather and the uncommon heavy leather (skinned, not converted).

The only leatherworking product I've had sell consistently has been Earthen Leather Shoulders (which is a dropped pattern) and armor kits (light/medium less so than heavy). I wouldn't even bother with Toughened Leather Gloves (blue or not) because the cost involved with making that far outstrip the possible profit (and that's after getting the elixirs of defense for free!). This is due mainly to my server, Elune, where folks flood the AH with leatherworked items at just above what an NPC vendor would pay for it.

An alternative would be to find an enchanter who will agree to pay you 15% above what a vendor would for your green+ items and sell them to him/her in bulk as you go through skillup phases. Also, what I've always done with AH listing is, pick the right time to put things up. I always go for 24 hr durations and I like to put my items up when they'll get the maximum possible exposure. I've found that for my server at least, that time is somewhere between 5 and 8pm EST (i.e. just before US primetime). This gets me the most possible eyeballs since Ironforge is generally a refugee camp (packed to the gills!) after 8pm EST.

Hope this helps, as disappointing and negative as it may sound.

Thanks for the help, it was very informative.

After having read Chtulhu's money guide, I decided to dump Leatherworking and pick up Mining instead. As a result I earned 2g in one night.

I might take up Leatherworking again once I get some lasting funds, but that probably won't be until Retail (I'm in the EU Beta if you hadn't noticed :)

for the leather gatherers out there, don't lose heart. i was able to sell my many stacks of light leather for average 15-18s, and also came away with 2g that evening. so don't think that mining is the only way.

i like the leather gathering because i kill so many animals already in my travels. mining would mean, i probably have to focus on that only.

at this early stage in my game playing, i like the exploration part of the game, so i'll continue doing that as opposed to visiting known mines and areas for the ores.
