Are there any penalties for switching professions? i am a lvl 37 leather and 55 skinning right now and i wanted to try other professions like tailoring since i have a bunch of items in my inventory. Will i lose any levels from switching to Tailoring and back to Leatherworking or Skinning?

You start out at level 1 and if you try to switch back Skinning/Leather will be level 1 also. At your level there is not much of a difference between level 1 and that.

Well that sucks, but thanks for the info!

Another question about switching professions then.

Say, for example I'm at 200+ on Leathercraft, and I switch professions. Then I come back to Leathercraft and I'm at level 1. Will my Patterns still be there as I advance in level, or do I need to purchase all of them again?

Hi erun.

I just tossed Alchemy last night. You will lose all the recipes associated with it, yes.

Bah!

That's ridiculous. So if I drop Leather for awhile, I lose those uncommon recipies like the Gem-Studded Belt and such.

Is it stated somewhere that this is what happens, or did you test it out (i.e. dropped alchemy, got it back again and leveled it the first 10-30 levels to see if any of the higher recipies appeared)?

Eeek, you caught me. I haven't tested it out personally. I guess this is no better time to find out in the name of science.

I guess while i am here i will go digging around the official websites and such.

In the meantime, i've been going by this FAQ, pretty nice.

7.5 How do I "unlearn" a profession?

Go to your skills panel (hit "K") and highlight the skill you want to forget. It'll show up in the lower panel and next to it you'll have one of those circle with a slash "No" symbols. Click on that symbol to forget the skill. A dialogue box will confirm your choice.

If you ever want to learn this profession again you will just start out as a novice (0 skill) with only the starting recipes.

Yes, you will lose all the recipes you learned before. I have a friend who did just what you're thinking of, and all his found recipes were subsequently lost. I guess it's Blizzard's way of making sure you develop your abilities to the utmost.
