What would be the best rod to fish moat carp? And out of the three which bait would be the best to fish moat carp: rouge rig, robber rig, or ball of insect paste?

composite and insect balls normally yeild the best results.

catch rate really depends on where you fish and your fishing level.

i personally fish them in rabao. 43 fishing gives me a decent catch rate. i think its a 8-12 fish tho i cant remember.

i've found halycon rod works better than the composite due to it being easier to bring in the fish with the halycon ^-^

and insect balls ftw

I concur with Jae; I always got "too small" messages with the Composite. If you want something cheaper than Halcyon, the Carbon is pretty good. And of course Insect Paste is the #1 bait for any kind of carp.

Carbon rod can be broken while fishing for moat in the three main towns, rusty subligars don't agree with them. >< It's safe to use carbon w/paste in Rabao if you can get there, and you'll only have moat carp and sandfish biting on insect paste there. I used to use a carbon rod in the small pond in la thaine, never broke one there, but you'll catch bass in addition to moats there. I believe rolanberry fields is also carbon & paste friendly, but you'll likely want a 50+ job to handle some of the mobs you can catch there. Knightswell is pretty good for moat, but arrowwood logs can break mithran rods there even, not sure about the halcyon, but pretty sure they can break hume as well.

Personally, when I fish for moat now to work on my lu shang quest, I use a hume rod and lil worms more often than not for bait. I seem to find the hume rod lowers their stamina more quickly, and once your skill raises high enough, I tend to catch as many moats with worms as I do with the more expensive paste, especially if you can't make your own.

Check over in the Trade Skill Forum, there should be a sticky about the various crafts with links to some guides, including fishing if it's something you want to pursue very far. ^^

Try the east pond in Rolanberry Fields. The one closest to Jueno. There are no Crayfish in the water so if you use insect Paste and you will only catch Moat Carps, Mobs and occasionally Rusty Picks, Rusty Caps, Rusty Leggings, Rusty Subligars and rarely, Mythril Swords and Silver Rings. I use a Halcyon Rod for all of the fish I target at the moment but the frugal can use a Glass Fiber Rod here. I'm not sure if the Mythril Sword will break it but the odds are very slim you will hook one. The fishing is good there no matter what moon or day it is and it is close to Jueno. This can be very convienient. If after a week you do not think this could be the best moat place on Vandy I'll eat my hat!

Top four locations (in my opinion):

1. East Pond in Rolanberry Fields with Halcyon + Insect Balls

2. Knightwell in West Ronfaure with Halcyon + Insect Balls

3. Rabao with Hume + Insect Balls

4. Windurst Walls/Waters/Woods with Halcyon + Insect Balls

The Composite is an all around bad rod post-update, unless you don't have the Lu Shang's and are targeting certain items or large unstackable fish. The Carbon used to be the best Moat Carp rod in the game, but like Shan said the Hume is just as durable as the Carbon and is able to deplete the stamina more quickly since it is a wooden rod (the Carbon is synthetic).
