Hey, everyone. I just got back into FFXI after a two year absence, and I'm really pleased to see all the positive changes in the game.
One thing that bugs me, however, is how difficult it is to get low level gear in the starting towns. I started a Hume WAR in Bastok (Ultramantis is his name, he's the short, blonde guy with an angry expression), and quickly got to Level Five in the Zerhun Mines, planning on grabbing myself a butterfly axe in order to start on G.Axes right off the bat.
The problem is ... they don't sell them at the vendors, because Bastok is in third place in Conquest, and there aren't any in the auction house!
While this is a plea for anyone with a spare Butterfly Axe kicking around to sell it to me (I have a few stacks of Wind Crystals and some hard gil kicking around), this is also a bit of a plea to the developers to give new characters a bit more options in outfitting themselves.
While I appreciate that leading in conquest will give your nation real, tangible benefits (better and cheaper gear in the shops, better Conquest Point items), how the heck am I supposed to level up if I can't get any gear? Bastok is pretty much barren except for a few Level 75s running around doing fame quests or something, and a scattering of new characters such as my own. I realize that everyone has moved on to the other cities, but still ... it kinda stinks that I'm stuck here with no options in how to outfit myself.
So, if anyone has a Butterfly Axe, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands for a reasonable fee ... because I really don't want to solo to level ten with my onion sword or a bronze axe. :P

Buy a one handed axe until there is another gaxe in the AH?

I keep many equipments from low levels to high so send me a tell in-game and I can probably lend it to you.
You can buy the NQ Axe from Ciqala at F-10 in Bastok Markets, but Bastok needs to be in 1st or 2nd place in conquest (If I remember correctly however, they are currently in 3rd (?))
I can also synth one for you if you want. I am well above the cap so I can HQ it pretty easily. I have a few of the materials already, so I won't charge you a very high amount. (maybe 2k or something).
I am usually on from 6:00PM to 12:00AM (Eastern) and I will most likely be around all weekend. Name ingame is "Lynchilles"
Otherwise, here is something I sometimes suggest to new players (or as in your case, new "returning" players).
Make a mule in San D'Oria. Grab a stack of silent oils and a stack of prism powders and run that mule to Jeuno and keep it there. You now have access to the Jeuno AH for anything you might need in the future. Also, a Jeuno mule will prove invaluable later on when you want to bazaar overnight in Rolanberry.
It only takes about 40 minutes or so to do (as long as you don't die on the way...). I always suggest San D'oria because for some reason it seems like it is the most straightforward route to Jeuno.
