Hello all to Ragnarok and indeed to Allakhazam.

My name is MysticSiN and i've had the game oh um... an hr now i think lol.

I have been using this site a lot to get some useful information about FFXI (I don't know anyone ingame and I'm not a returning player, so I'm learning slowly as i go along hehe)and now I've been assigned to this server I thought I'd make myself known :D

Hi *waves*

At present my char (Mysticsin) is a newly created RedMage. I chose this because I love both BLM and WHM so I thought a RDM would be a natural medium for me ^.^ Then i can have a taste of both BLM and WHM.

I don't really know what I'm doing atm I've learnt how to equip spells and I'm in West Raunfare (sp?) killing hares lol.

I am wondering if any of you experienced people see me passing by or anything and i seem stuck to offer any advice ^_^. I don't know anyone atm and its hard cause if im stuck I have noone to ask lol. So any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated :D

By the way I'd really like to join a LS so I've got ppl to talk to immediately if I need help. If anyoen knows of a popular/experienced LS around that takes new guys like me udner their wing please let me know :D

Ok i've spoken too much now I'm boring myself. I hope to get to know everyone and See you around I hope
*waves*

Hi and welcome. If you need anything, just hit Tif up with a tell in game. I may be sort of hard to get in touch with lately, as I been sick irl and been going away a lot without warning. I do check for tells when I get back though, so if you don't get an immediate response, I'm not ignoring you, just on one of my random afk spells.

I also have a small linkshell that is for people of all levels/experience. Some days it's pretty busy, other days it's quite empty. Many users do have multiple linkshells. This actually turns out to be quite nice, since it's even more resources to pull from for information. However, we are always happy to welcome a new player to the shell and help get them going. The only thing we ask in return, is that as you gain experience, you offer help to those who you meet who are just starting out.

thanks a lot Tif

I did not know you could have multiple LS's

I would love to be a part also if I can.

And of course I will help anyone that needs it. Especially new people to the game also that need some help from a fellow new guy's perspective.

I will definately be on around 8-9 eastern tonight. I do Limbus on Thursday's so there will be an hour or two that I won't be able to talk much. But if you want, hit me with a tell and in between all of the craziness I'll try to find someone to come out and give you a pearl.

You can have more the one shell, though only one can be equipped at a time and each will take up an inventory slot. That is one of the reasons for the quiet time on OOSG, is because a lot of us tend to have our other shells equipped at certain times.

Well, I don't have a Linkshell to offer you, but if you ever have a question or need help with something send Mikie a tell, I don't like exping much so I am usually free.

Welcome to Ragnarok, my fellow San d'Orian! If you ever need anything, I'm usually on my BLM, Tiffarah. Jus' a warning, even though she's a chick, I'm a guy. She's just a heck of a lot more fun to play and RP than my male characters. I also started her as a RDM. I lvled RDM to 20 and decided to start lvling BLM as a sub. I'm nearly to 20 on BLM as well. My WHM is only lvl 5 though, so if you ever want/need a healer, hit me up with a tell and I'll lvl WHM for a while.

I'm usually on from 6-9am PST on weekdays. It's early, I know, but I have no time in the evenings. I have managed to make quite a few friends from all over the world because of it, though. If you ever need food, I am a cook as well and can advise you on what food would be good for your job.

A few tips at early lvls... Always have signet cast on you. Enemies will drop crystals this way, which you can use for synthing or sell for profit in order to buy gear. It is probably the best moneymaker early on. At first, all you will get is Earth crystals in W.Ronfaur, from rabbits and worms. Occasionally a wind crystal from bats. But fear not, the days are coming when you will be able to kill orcs on a reliable basis. This nets you fire crystals. Depending on the economy at the time, fire crystals usually go for 4-5k a stack (12/stack), wind for 3-4k a stack, and earth usually hover around 1k a stack.

Be sure to pick the right weapon for your job. Each job has a weapon type they are most proficient in. At first, as a RDM you will likely go with swords, since you will be playing melee as well as spell casting. Later on you are going to want to switch to wands for the boosts they give to your magic skills, and because you will be meleeing far less. I stopped meleeing after the first few lvls of partying in the dunes, (around 12-14) simply because I wasn't doing damage with my weapon to speak of and it was distracting me from my primary role of enfeebler and backup healer.

Without getting too much into the roles of different jobs, RDM isn't quite a mixture of WHM and BLM. They have their own role to fill, based on what they are most proficient at, enfeebling and enhancing. Yes, the RDM can heal, and the RDM can nuke, but it does neither very well. They don't have the MP to replace a real healer, and they don't have the elemental skill to replace a real nuker. What they do have is the best skills for reducing an enemy's effectiveness in battle, and improving a party's effectiveness. The spells that RDM excells at will save valuable downtime because their enfeebles will reduce the MP output of the rest of the party, as well as the HP cost of the melees. A RDM can be the difference between making a EXP chain, or even between life and death. This is especially true in the dunes when you get to pugils. Everyone likes to see:

XRDMX casts paralyze.
Beach Pugil is paralyzed.
Beach Pugil readies Screwdriver.
Beach Pugil is paralyzed.

It is true that BLM and WHM get many of the same spells that RDM does, but they can't enfeeble as well. Their skill at enfeebling capps much lower than RDM. With gear in place to increase MND or INT according to the spell, you will be landing enfeebs on mobs that would take a WHM or BLM 3+ casts to land and wouldn't last nearly as long.

In the end, what matters is that you know the strenghs of your job, and play acordingly. Otherwise, you are gimping yourself. Will yu be an asset or a hindrance? The choice is before you.

I don't mean for this to sound like a lecture. This is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. And it is quite addictive. There is so much to do and see, it's easy to lose yourself in this amazingly in-depth world. Personally, I think RDM is the most exciting and versatile job in the game. It is also one of the two jobs with the potential for soloing, if you know what you're doing. Remember what is most important to spend your gil on, Spells>Armor>Food>Weapon. Some might not agree with me on this order, but from what I've played so far, that's how it works best for me.

Finally, learn how to make useful macros and use them. Macros are invaluable to saving time in battle. The best thing about them is the ability to temporarily swap gear quickly, according to the spell you are casting. This becomes more important later on, but you can begin right away. For instance, get a sword for melee and equip it as your main. Get a wand that has +INT and +MND and put it in your spell macros like this:

/equip Main Willow Wand
/wait 1
/ma Cure <stpc>
/wait 4
/equip Main Bee Spatha

This gives you a temporary boost to your MND for a stronger cure spell. It works well in early lvls before your cure is capped at 30 HP, and it automatically switches you back to your sword for melee.

wow

Thanks a lot for the advice :D

Ya I am aware its a game and i should have fun but its nice to actually play the class right ^_^ I don't want to be an endangerment to the team I am in.

/equip Main Willow Wand
/wait 1
/ma Cure <stpc>
/wait 4
/equip Main Bee Spatha

That macro doesm't work. If you want to cast cure you don't need a /wait in there either. If you want a Willow Wand in your cure macro it would be as follows.

/equip main "Willow Wand"
/ma "Cure" <t> (you can use <stpc> but <t> is easier imo)
/wait 4
/equip main "Bee Spatha"

Just a few little mistakes, but the macro he posted will not work.

Welcome to Ragnarok and FFXI ^^ Always nice to see and meet new players.

Coldharted was right in that the above macro will not work as posted. You definitely need the quotes. However, I must respectfully disagree with pretty much everything else he posted :)

A) You WILL need a /wait in that macro if you use <stpc> but not if you use <t>. The <stpc> switch brings up a targeting cursor that allows you to select the target for the spell, either by tab-ing through the avaliable targets or by hitting F1-F6 and selecting one of your party members. Without a /wait in the macro, when you switch weapons you will momentarily "blink" out and the targeting cursor will disappear causing you to have to hit the macro again. With <t> this is not an issue, but I recommend using <stpc>. See below.

* For future reference: <st> will allow tab-ing through all targets, <stpc> only tabs through Player Characters, i.e. your party members and other players, and <stnpc> tabs through all Non-Player Characters, i.e. monsters.

B) <stpc> is far superior to <t>. Use it and love it. In fact, for the macro they are suggesting, using <t> makes absolutely no sense. Since, you have a sword in your hand I'm assuming you are either playing solo and whacking a mob or in a low level party and whacking a mob (perfectly acceptable for a low lvl RDM). The problem with <t> here is that if you are fighting a monster and use /ma "Cure" <t> you will simply try to cure the monster you are fighting! (It will have no effect, but it wont do much for you either.) Using <stpc> will allow you to fight and cure yourself and/or others. 'Nuf said.

C) Don't bother with equipment swapping at your present state of experience. It's totally unnecessary. If you are soloing you certainly don't want to swap out your weapon for a wand... you will lose all your TP and won't be able to get off that key Fast Blade. If you are in a pt you will either be doing one of two things. 1) You'll have a sword and be tryin to mix it up with EnThunder and do some damage while healing/enfeebling/nuking as your pt dictates. Or 2) you'll have a wand full time and be sitting in the back focusing of casting spells. (At higher lvls the issue of RDM fighting while xping is highly debatable and I won't touch on that here.) Either way, you don't need to worry about swapping equip just yet.

D) My advice, at your lvl RDM. Solo until you hit lvl 12 at least. With the new Empress Bands, and the increased xp you get from EPs this is actually better than pting in Valkurm Dunes. After that, get a sword, all your spells, and focus mainly on equip that gives +MP and +MND and head out. Get into a pt and try to fight, backup heal, enfeeble, and nuke occasionally. Use these macro for your Cures:

Cure
/ma "Cure" <stpc>

Cure II (at lvl 14 if I remember correctly)
/ma "Cure II" <stpc>

And that's it :D Good luck with RDM and the game. Look me up if you ever need help or advice. Take care.
