I'm upset at the downtime too, but I have to consider that there is an expansion pack being released in 4 days, plus the game has just been released to Europe. That puts a lot on SE's plate for these two weeks.
And, similar to what Seryn said, I've been playing this game for almost 9 months. Last night was the first time an outage of this magnitude has occurred in the time I've been playing, and for Japan and the eastern U.S., it wasn't even during peak time.
While it's true that SE really botched this last patch, their track record is still very good with keeping their servers dependable and sticking to their maintenance schedules with very few extensions. This was an enormous patch, and even though they have Atomos to test it out before release, there are almost always things you won't see until public release, and the bigger the patch, the more stuff will be wrong. I used to be a system administrator and help desk specialist, so I speak from experience here.
Plus, because of my help desk experience, I find it hard to get too mad at them, 'cause I know what it's like when stuff goes wrong and you have hundreds of angry people shaking their fists at you.
Servers are not run by robots. Those who maintain the worlds are people just like you and me. I think they're doing a pretty good job overall, myself.
Even so, it would be nice to get a thank you from SE for being patient through all this. I'm not saying we should get our money back, but maybe those moogles could hand out presents. ^_^
