I'm calling my bank tomorrow to file a complaint against POL. Why are we getting charged monthly fees when the game cannot even operate properly. I want my money back!!! TPTB at POL & FFXI need to understand our frustrations. Please do the same, and send the idiots at POL a strong message.

Since I bought the game at the end of last October, there have been perhaps 7 days total that I have been unable to play due to maintenance, crashes, etc. 7 days in almost a year is pretty good to me. Especially considering how well the servers and the rest of the game runs on a daily basis. I rarely lag out or get disconnected, and when I do, it's more often than not due to problems with my ISP, not with Square's servers.

Aside from one or two times when the servers were suddenly unavailable for an hour or two back near the initial launch, last night's outage is the first time that I can remember where the servers were unexpectedly down for any extended period of time. Square's response was also pretty quick. They recognized there was a problem and began investigating it within 30 minutes of when it occurred. Sure, it took 8 hours for them to resolve the problem, but without knowing exactly what happened on their end, it's hard for us to criticise them for the amount of time it took to recover.

The recent update has been a little rough, but considering that they are launching the European version, which seems to include additional language support (I saw some German chat rooms last night), along with a new expansion pack while still trying to retain compatibility with people who don't have the expansion or the previous expansion, as well as compatiblity across two platforms, I think they're doing a pretty good job.

Oh, and in case you wanted to work it out:

31 days * 8 Hours = 248 hours.
$12.95/month / 248 hours/month = $0.0522/hour.
8 Hours Unexpected Downtime * $0.0522/hour = $0.42

Yeah, I think I'll call Square and demand my 42 cents back! Those bastards!

I'm upset at the downtime too, but I have to consider that there is an expansion pack being released in 4 days, plus the game has just been released to Europe. That puts a lot on SE's plate for these two weeks.

And, similar to what Seryn said, I've been playing this game for almost 9 months. Last night was the first time an outage of this magnitude has occurred in the time I've been playing, and for Japan and the eastern U.S., it wasn't even during peak time.

While it's true that SE really botched this last patch, their track record is still very good with keeping their servers dependable and sticking to their maintenance schedules with very few extensions. This was an enormous patch, and even though they have Atomos to test it out before release, there are almost always things you won't see until public release, and the bigger the patch, the more stuff will be wrong. I used to be a system administrator and help desk specialist, so I speak from experience here.

Plus, because of my help desk experience, I find it hard to get too mad at them, 'cause I know what it's like when stuff goes wrong and you have hundreds of angry people shaking their fists at you.

Servers are not run by robots. Those who maintain the worlds are people just like you and me. I think they're doing a pretty good job overall, myself.

Even so, it would be nice to get a thank you from SE for being patient through all this. I'm not saying we should get our money back, but maybe those moogles could hand out presents. ^_^

I always thought that would be a great way to deal with things too. The servers are down for an hour or so, given everyone a free Chocobo Ticket. The servers go down for a day, give everyone a Coloured Drop, one of the other common event items, or a small amount of gil. Something small wouldn't unbalance the game too much, and it would be a nice way for them to say, "Sorry about the server crash."

Maybe instead of writing them hate mail we could tell them about this idea. Smiley: grin

Well to tell you, if you cancel that payment, SE will force it back through to your account. I know this because I had the JP version and when I cancelled my credit card, they charged the money directly to my bank account. It took me 6 months to get my bank to stop payment. Each month they told me the payments would not be sent, but then again they were. Eventually I got someone who knew what they were doing, and cancelled the last 2 transactions, gave me my money back, and POL stopped billing me. Then 2 months later I got a statement saying they took 2 months worth of payments out, because I hadn't cancelled my subscription. Though they haven't charged me since :p
