Seriously, this. That last episode was made up of about eighty percent new or different material. Granted the stuff with Dany involves a bit more intrigue than the books, but most of the changes really don't help the story much and will cause problems later on down the line.

At least someone sees where I'm coming from...

But you have to remember, for those of us that didn't read the books, we're not missing anything. I think it's been a really good series so far and anything they've added and/or left out hasn't taken away from it from my perspective.

It's like none of you ever read a Stephen King book that was made into a movie. Smiley: oyvey

I really liked this week's episode. It's important for them to have some moments of tenderness in between all of the beheadings...the darker moments benefit from the contrast. Nice emotional scenes with Tyrion, Jorah, etc.

....yeah, not to mention the totally random, completely unnecessary pre-sex scene with King Robb and the soulful pretty girl. Smiley: rolleyes

I love some of the characters of the show, but I'm liking the screenplay less and less each week.

But you have to remember, for those of us which did read the books, this is playing out to being a completely different story than the one we're expecting. Small changes here and there add up to bigger changes later. That, or plot holes.

Yes because the soulful pretty girl(I assume it's the "nurse from Volantis", as I've not seen this week's episode yet) is a completely random character. She's not from the books at all. Smiley: rolleyes

She's a very obvious stand-in for lady what's-her-face (Jeyne?) that Robb finds himself taken with in the books. That character wasn't really fleshed out in the novels (she just sort of appears out of the blue), so HBO sort of needed to provide her with a more robust introduction and backstory. I suspect that since that would involve making stuff up, they figured they might as well just rewrite the character to make her introduction flow more seamlessly into Robb's storyline. Probably went something like:

"Robb's on the battlefield, so how does he meet a girl?"

"We'll have her be a field nurse."

"Well, she's supposed to be nobility, right? Is there a way we can fit that in?"

"Sure, we'll give her this backstory to explain why she's totally down with sawing off dude's limbs, and to show her as a nice, principled girl that Robb would dig."

It's a small, superficial change, and there aren't any real consequences from it. It addresses a minor issue that arose from the translation from book to tv. Makes perfect sense to me.

I don't think she's even a stand in. I think it is her. Why else would he be so reluctant to go the Crag?

Post-Traumatic Stress from a failed childhood attempt at the Aggro Crag on Nickelodeon's GUTS, I suspect.

Yes, I'm sure she'll end up being the Robbs Queen.

The whole story with her just seems way contrived and cliche for GRRM to have ever written. She's a literary anomaly. It provides good opportunity for visually pleasing naked body scenes though.

This is all about me! Smiley: mad

Yes, I do see your side of it. And you could be right. But from my perspective, it's still been a really entertaining show.

And now we need to find the dwagons.

I'm not so worried about the director re-arranging Robb's story arc a bit, or even condensing 3 books' worth of Dany's misadventures in the Far East. What worries me is that they appear to be setting up Arya's plot line to completely skip Bravos, which is one of my favorite threads from the book.

Also, I love every exchange between Cersei and Tyrion. The loathing is so think you can practically cut it with a knife.

What makes you think so? I must confess I don't actually remember how, or why, she goes there. God my memory sucks.

Also, what, nobody watched GUTS? That was a great joke. You guys suck. Smiley: glare

Jaqar H'Glockenschpiel gives her an iron coin, and tells her that it will buy her passage to Bravos with the magic phrase "valar morghuelis", which means "all men must die." There's still the possibility that she'll go there anyways, as she still has to roam around the Riverlands with the Hound for a few months after he flees King's Landing following the battle of Blackwater Bay.

Ah, thanks. I hope they include that portion. I love the part where she's training in the House of the Many Faced God.

Side note: I was wondering about a related change: In the HBO series, Jaqen says that it's the "Red God" who must be repayed for the 3 deaths. But in the books, doesn't he worship the Many Faced God? Does this mean that in the TV series he's supposed to be a follower of Rh'lorr (sp?) instead, like the red priests?

Also, I think I was more bummed out by the Hound's death than any other character in the books. I found him so interesting, and it sucked that he basically died between chapters in such an anti-climactic way. I really wouldn't mind if HBO tweaked that portion a bit.

I noticed this as well, but as I recall, the Many-Faced God is really just a collection of all gods. Still, this may be yet another clue that they plan to skip the Bravos segment.

With that in mind, I found “The Prince of Winterfell” to be quite a relief, a smuggled satchel of onions for a starving man. It was a relatively quiet hour, at least by Game of Thrones standards: no savage disembowelments, no dark, murderous *******

I love these recaps. He seems to be of the same mind as me about the episode. Also, it's fun to watch the onset of paranoia as he guesses every which way about which major character will be the next to go. He seems to be guessing Stannis, Robb, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Theon.

The Many Faced God is supposed to be death. At least, that's what I understand. He's a representaton of all the gods of death throughout the world.

Again, Braavos is kind of key to Arya's story. I don't see how they could justify cutting it out, without just completely dropping her from the programme.

edit: here's an interview with the man himself. He kind of touches on the reasoning behind some of the changes: http://youtu.be/QTTW8M_etko

Does anyone else think that Peter Dinklage looks like a Mini Hugh Laurie?

(At least, when both are in make up on TV)

Well, I wasn't the only one that thought so, I looked it up today and found a few people talking about it. I just kept thinking the whole time Tyrion was up on those battlements looking over the walls, his face reminded me of House.

I found a pretty funny picture. I mean, the pictures they chose didn't highlight the similarities as well as what I kept seeing in my mind, but the equation made me laugh.

I really enjoyed this week's episode. Also they've finally made a change I like. Tyrion didn't lose his nose! I think that would have annoyed me by halfway through next season.
