Damn you Bones! Damn your high quality animation enticing me into series that I know won't be good.

Heroman is one of the many series airing this spring. Reviews have been mixed. A lot of this problem stems from it being a join project with Stan Lee, and consequently it's a very old school comic setup with anime cosmetics.

My take on it based on the first episode: disappointing. I don't have a problem with trite setups, Eureka 7 had a very cliche setup, but Heroman looks like it has a trite execution as well. It seems the only aspect modern about the series is the animation and designs, which themselves are fairly high quality. It has the problem of a lot of older heroic series where characters and events seem to be there for the sake of the audience and could not exist on their own. As a somewhat minor flaw, but indicative of larger problems, the main character Joey doesn't change clothes when he heads to his part time job at a restaurant (just before he rushes home to close a window that was specifically left open so he would have to rush home...). He doesn't change into a work outfit because the restaurant doesn't exist outside of being "that place where the main character has a part time job." In another example the father of "the girl" has extended meta knowledge of Joey and tells his daughter she shouldn't be hanging around with the likes of him. He only has this knowledge to demonstrate how everyone is against the main character.

Oh, and the main robot of the series is a toy brought to life by lightning. Well, not just brought to life, but increased in mass, changed from crappy plastic to metal, and had additional components installed. It's less like Johnny 5 being zapped to life in Short circuit and more life Johnny 5 being zapped into the terminator.

I probably won't be watchingg more episodes.
