Strike Witches finally came out on DVD yesterday!

I pre-ordered it back in January and forgot when it exactly it was coming out til I checked my email today.

Quote:
The story revolves around teenage girls who are essentially moe anthropomorphizations of military planes.

Also, they don't wear pants. Smiley: wink

Quote:
In a further bizarre tweaking, all the pilots are actually based on real World War Two pilots, including one who is actually still alive.
I believe I remember reading that General Yeager was not amused when he found out that they had based the character of a teenage girl with no pants on him.

Quote:
Despite being a show about 13-20 year old girls fighting an evil alien threat, many WWII references were made in both moefied and non-moefied ways. The example of Erica Hartmann stealing panties was Hitler's hat being taken by Ace Pilot Erich Hartmann.

I started watching for the basic premise. I stayed for the awesomeness of realizing that a lot of the things that happen in the show are actually historical references. My inner geek finds that awesome in a way my outer geek... also finds awesome.

You'll have to tell me how it is. I was hesitant, but glancing at tvtropes and seeing "Better Than It Sounds: Despite the odd premise and blatant fanservice, the show has strong character development and was recognized as one of the best anime series of 2008 by the Japanese Ministry of Culture itself," makes me feel a little better about giving it a go.

Another series which seems similar (at least superficially) is sky girls.

I've actually already seen it(in a poor quality fansub back when I still watched things like that), so I can already tell you it's fairly good(at least, I rather enjoyed it). I'm mostly excited to see it in a non-grainy format.

The two are often compared due to their surface similarities, though I can't comment if the similarities go beyond that since I haven't actually ever seen Sky Girls, though I mean to eventually.

It's too bad the DVDs won't come with the awesome uncensored episode 7 of No-Pants Witches. Although the only thing I can think of when I look back at the series is why no pants? I mean if there was some sort of standard uniform it wouldn't bother me as much but when people pretty much wear whatever they want minus the pants it kind of bothered me a little.

This is probably because strike witches (atleast the anime project) sort of came to be after Sky Girls was received decently, and someone probably thought to themselves, "How can we appeal to a wider audience?" and came up with the answer no pants all the time instead of just storyline contextual times.

Strike witches is good but it would be better with a little less fan-service or, like Manosuke said, there was a reason why they don't wear pants. I'm still looking forward to the second season.

I forgot how relevant this link was.

Oh dammit, now I'm got up in a series of anime OP parodies, the tvtropes of youtube.

I disagree. Half the fun of the show is that the fan-service crosses the line twice making the fan service not just fan-service, but hilarious as well.

I just thought I'd update this thread to let you know that Strike Witches 2 is going to air this summer. I hear they fight both pants and skirts in this season.
