Yup, the new topic is somewhat for Poldaran. Initial thoughts, less than a minute in: the theme songs seems WAY too energetic for what I imagine is a high school romance series. We shall see! :-D

Second impression, immediately following the first. Whoever the red-haired girl is who ends up kissing the white0haired girl as per Poldaran's avatar, seems to have the EXACT same voice actress as Rika in Higurashi. Lolz have come from this. I might just be drunk, though.

Third thought:

"Hands touch... eyes meet...
Sudden silence... sudden heat...
Hearts beat, in a giddy world..."

I don't know why, but suddenly music from "Wicked" has entered my head. I blame the UF victory leading to excessive booze.

Fourth thought: her name is Aoi! Aoi means blue! Actually, odds are the kanji is spelt differently, but the romanji means blue! Thanks you "Aoi House"!

Fifth thought: Being a Japanese anime yuri is waaaaay too much work than I am cut out for. Recording measurements and all? Forget that.

Sixth thought: Call me dubious, but one girl being able to make another swoon by practically raping her? Huh. Yuri is pretty much the EXACT same as some normal anime, with some genders changed.

... that's not to say I'm NOT enjoying it :D

Episode 2: Etoile looks a little too much like Sephiroth for my tastes. The story is progressing pretty slowly thus far. I can't quite understand what Etoile is supposed to be (I guess her title is Etoile, not her name). I'm not a huge fan of the music; the intro and end are J-pop, which is totally at odds with the classical music playing within the episodes. On to episode three!

Episode 3, halfway through. Ok, so Etoile's role is to act as an intermediary between the three council presidents. I guess that makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why she's ditching, and I'm curious as to why she got elected or chosen or whatever. In any high school I've ever heard of, they'd kick her out of her position and give it to someone else.

Edit 2: Finished episode 3. I guess Etoile is universally loved because she can instantly seduce any girl she stares at? I'm really not sure. Tamao also made it sound like Etoile is a womanizer, as she said "No one can resist her for more than a month."

There's story behind it. You'll have to wait to find out. Smiley: grin

As for why they don't kick her out? Dunno...tradition maybe? Smiley: tongue

I like the second OP better. Just fits more, IMO. That said, it's anime...you're gonna get J-pop. Well, except the times you get J-metal. Or when you watch Maria-sama ga Miteru, which has a much softer opening theme that fits the series quite well, but it's a much different series and harder to get into(assuming you're not a young girl, I would guess), which is why I suggested this one and not that one. Also, the lyrics of both openings are pretty fitting with the series, as I recall.

It's really just Nagisa that reacts like that to Etoile. Other girls adore her before she pursues them and she doesn't need them to freeze for her to kiss them. She's the Etoile because she's universally adored(I can't say much more or I might spoil it), and not the other way around.

The translation I watched was a bit different. It was more like "No one can keep her attention for more than a month." Basically warning Nagisa not to get too involved as she'd just end up heartbroken because Shizuma(Etoile) doesn't really connect with the girls she pursues. Again, I can't tell you more or I might spoil things.

Additionally, I mentioned this in the Harem Anime thread, but Nagisa/Etoile isn't the only big relationship thing going on in this. Another girl and her relationships will be a focus for maybe a third of all the episodes as well.

That kind of thing shows up in a ton of animes. It completely drives the plot of an episode in at least two(Girl's High and Ouran High School Host Club...the latter of which you should really watch because it's probably the funniest anime I've ever seen). TVTropes even has an entry on the whole physicals day thing. I think it may actually be something they do in Japanese schools, though I doubt it's quite as big a deal as most animes I've seen make it out to be.

That makes a lot more sense!

On to episode 5 now, and the anime just made me laugh out loud for the first time (when Chiyo smacks her head into the desk while bowing). It still feels slow, but I think I'm getting where it's headed. I guess my mind is still wrapped around supernatural thrillers with gore galore (thanks, Higurashi), so the pacing of a lesbian school days anime is throwing me off a bit. It's not bad though, and I think the characters will be likable.

Edit: I rewatched the head-desk scene three more times and still laughed out loud involuntarily every time. Hahaha!

In hindsight, maybe I should have told you to watch School Days after Higurashi. Then you would have had your fill of violence before watching Strawberry Panic.
