Schue: Does anyone know what a ballad is?
Brittany: A male duck!

(later)

Brittany: I think the duck is in the hat.

If I didn't despise Brittany with every fiber of my being for looking exactly like the girls I went to high school with, I'd adore her.

I was laughing a lot during that bit with Emma and also earlier when Rachel and Shu first sang the duet. His facial expressions during that were priceless... plus I love that song Smiley: tongue.

I feel terrible for missing this last night (I was at a "fresh start" program at the new church I'm visiting. Er, wasn't worth missing Glee. Sorry God), but I'm watching it tonight and so far... oh my! I feel like this will be an AWESOME episode. The facial expressions in that first song were awesome, the Suzie Pepper story had me laughing WAY too hard, and even Finn thinking about "his" daughter is rather touching.

Also, I think the duck is in the hat.

Edit:

"Were you just singing to a sonogram!?"

HAHAHA!

"Do you think you understood the message I was trying to get across with that ballad?"
"Yes! It means I am very young, and it's hard for you to stand close to me!"

Also, something not mentioned before; this is really the first time (outside of Kurt) when we have some parents introduced to the story. I'm actually enjoying that.

And the Glenn Beck scene was hilarious when Quinn's parents were introduced.

Well, we'd met Finn's mom in the pilot and briefly in the hitting-the-mailman scene, and we met Puck's mom as she watched Schindler's List and did the guilt thing on him, but yeah, parents have been pretty sparse on this show. I'm actually trying to keep count of how many of them have two parents, because early on there seemed to be a lot of single-parent homes.

Thus far we have:

Single-parent homes:
Puck (dad's a deadbeat, Mom seems a little neurotic)
Finn (dad's deceased, Mom seems pretty decent, blue collar sort)
Kurt (mom's deceased, Dad's super-awesome)

Two parent homes:
Quinn (parents are Bible-belt conservative hypocrites)
Rachel (never met them but back-story indicates they're stage parents)
Artie (implied, never met them but he rides to events with his dad and his mom survived the car crash)

So, there's six down so far.

And having written this, I've totally decided to ship for Kurt's dad and Finn's mom.

There was a Glenn Beck scene? O.o ****, I'm going to have to go watch that again, I totally missed it... I thought the scene where Finn was singing to Quinn at dinner was pretty priceless too, as you slowly start to see the lyrics sinking into her parents' heads through their facial expressions. It did rather infuriate me though. I just can't understand how parents who claim to love their daughter could throw her out of the house for making a mistake. When I was in high school, my dad threatened to do the same if I got pregnant before I graduated, but I'm nearly 100% sure that was an empty threat and he wasn't saying it from an anti-sex standpoint, but trying to place a big importance on my education.

More just that the father was so excited Beck was coming on TV.

Granted, all the characters and interactions are taken to extremes, but they set up the parents well for this. Quinn says it herself; the family ignores every negative issue (usually through booze), hence why they can do what they do. I'm not justifying it, but they explain it well enough.

PS: Awesome that they named Finn/Quinn "Babygate."

Edit: Also, totally thought the father was going to hit Quinn when they were fighting. Glad that didn't happen, at least.

And I LOVE Artie singing. Every song where he sings is one of my favorites.

This week's songs. As I did last week, I'm just going to call them Song1, Song2 etc for the link, but if you hover over the link, you will see the title of the song in the URL.

Song1 Really looking forward to this one
Song2 Disappointed in this one, saw a sneak peek at the scene in question, and it's not even close to being the context I would have expected
Song3 Yes, Ryan Murphy, we get it. Mash-ups are uber cool and loads of fun. Can we please move on now?
Song4 Poor Tina, they auto-tuned the heck outta her
Song5 Am I the only one that thinks that, as far as soulful R&B voices goes, Amber Riley aka Mercedes is only fair-to-middling? She's okay, especially for her age, but she's NOT all that.
Song6 Not familiar with this song.

Enjoy!

Soo...that there? Where two weeks of massive character development basically gets reset for the sake of more absurd hijinks? Classic Ryan Murphy. Knew that was going to happen.

But hey, they finally found a song for Tina.

Also, Rachel was on the pageant circuit as a child. Color me totally unsurprised.

Ugh.

Two more new episodes of Glee and then NOTHING until April 13. A five month hiatus can completely torpedo a fledgling show in the ratings, even one that has had as popular a response as Glee. And why? Because FOX wants to run their crappy no-talent competition show that I stopped bothering with YEARS ago because it's a crappy no-talent show.

Up yours, American Idol, you suck ***.

Torpedo up or torpedo down? I'm not looking forward to the five month hiatus either, and I freaking hate American Idol. I detest the talent shows in general, but American Idol is especially bad because of Simon, imo.

Torpedo down. While the truly devoted viewers will hang in there during a long hiatus, the more casual viewers who aren't aware that they show will be back will just give up on it. A new show can easily lose it's audience-building momentum. A long hiatus early in its run has been the death of a good many shows.

I tried AI for a couple seasons, but watching someone be insulting just because he can isn't appealing me, and all it did was instruct me on how out of touch my expectations for good performers were from those of mainstream America.

The only competition show I watch now is So You Think You Can Dance, and the reason I watch it is because there's really no way to fake it on that show. The good dancers will be the ones that end up in the final competition, and the not-so-good ones will be the ones that get pared away.

Ostensibly, it's a search for "Americans favorite dancer" as opposed to "America's best dancer" but honestly, in the six seasons the show has been on so far, there has only been a SINGLE time when I have seen a contestant skate through on popularity alone, and that was just a few weeks ago when a very cute and popular pair of dancers turned in a truly disastrous performance and didn't even wind up in the bottom three couples.

Yeah, there have been some times when MY favorite dancer hasn't been the winner, but there has never been a time when I could say that the winner didn't actually have the skills to deserve it. Usually if I'm actually surprised by the winner, it's because the winner turned out to be female, and I tend to overlook the female dancers because my attention is first and foremost on the guys.

Furthermore, the comments from the judges tend to actually be much more intelligent, as opposed to twenty renditions of, "You worked it OUT!" each show. Even Mary Murphy, the annoying and ditzy judge with the irritating squeaky voice, truly does know what she's talking about and can provide solid input about technique when it comes to ballroom dancing.

Yeah, I really hope that doesn't happen because I'd hate to see Glee get canceled because Fox was stupid. It's one of my favorite shows now, dare I say it, I even like it more than House! Part of that is because House has become rather formulaic, but that's a story for another thread.

SYTYCD, from what I've seen is definitely one of the better talent shows for sure. I've watched part of the episodes from time to time while waiting for Glee to come on, and it isn't too bad. I just generally don't like talent shows overall anymore. There's way too many of them. I can understand why, it's an easy way for networks to get ratings, but it still annoys me.

There's a pretty hilarious preview for next week's episode up at http://www.fox.com/glee/.

Kurt: (to Santana) To get back at Puck. Aren't you guys dating?
Santana: Sex is not dating.
Brittany: If it were, Santana and I would be dating.

Casting and minor plot spoilers for the "back nine" episodes that are starting to film, and will start airing in April.

Yeah, because you know, the wait until April isn't going to be interminable enough.

WOW.

Sometimes Glee is hit or miss with songs. I would rate this as a solid 8. Every song was good. Even the last one, which I don't care for much as a real song, was pretty good. The first song at sectionals was awesome, because we did the musical it is from in my senior year, and I was Nicky Arnstein :-P The second sectionals song was just great, and will really appeal to the older crowd watching.

That said, the plot was over-the-top ridiculous. Especially at the end, with Will running in slow-motion down the hall, I literally cracked up laughing because it was so ridiculous. Holy drama, batman!

Still, just a great ending to the season. 4th best episode musically, I would say. Maybe 5th. Worth downloading a few of the songs, for sure.

I can't wait until April; Chuck and Glee? TV will be worth watching!

That was good.

It's funny, I downloaded the songs earlier this week and wasn't terribly impressed listening to them in Itunes. I even had a big rant prepared in my head about how overrated I think Amber Riley's voice is. But when the episode aired, I completely loved them (well, except for the last one.)

Yep, that was good. It's gonna suck having to go four months without this delicious feeling of anticipation and subsequent feeling of satisfaction each week.

Good episode, nice tie-up. For the neatness of it, you'd think (and probably be right) that it was designed to be "done" in one season if necessary.

For all the regular cast, my favorite character of the episode was the Vice Comptroller.
