Hiyas everyone, i just came across a movie that's coming out soon that I thought the Alla community would appreciate.

Its Called Avatar, and its supposed to be the biggest movie of all time. Its written and directed by James Cameron, who has also directed some of the most bankable films in history, including Aliens, Terminator, and of course Titanic, the highest grossing movie ever made.
So far the movie is costing upwards of $300 million (US). Its a futuristic movie that mixes animation, live action scenes and the latest in computer graphics, and may be the most expensive movie in history when it opens on December 18th of 2009. Its also using the latest in 3D technology.

There is huge secrecy surrounding this film as a quick Google of it, and not much comes up besides cast and a quick plot. The director did unveil 24 minutes of footage to an industry audience at the annual Cinema Expo in Amsterdam last month. It was the first time any outsiders had seen a glimpse of Avatar, and apparently they gave it a standing ovation.

Titanic went on to gross more than 1.8 billion, no other movie has come close. Mr.Cameron thinks this movie will surpass that!

If anyone knows more about this film I would love to hear about it, as its got my brain tingling =)

Cheers

Aren't they all? I mean, I've yet to see a movie advertising itself (or being called Edit: I take this back. Any Uwe Boll movie is automatically called this.) the biggest load of crap of all time that wasn't said in a "LOOK, I ARE IRONIC" sort of way.

$300,000,000 movie? I guess that's impressive. Truth be told, I've enjoyed plenty of movies that cost as little as $375,000.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail only cost about $350,000, so yeah.

i know 2 things about this movie.

1) M.N.S's Last Air Bender (Avatar cartoon movie) could not be called Avatar because Cameron already owned the rights.

2) He wanted to make this 10 years ago, but no studio would pick it up.

Maybe it will be a good movie, maybe it won't. But a good new sci-fi movie is needed.

Fans wearing 3D glasses clapped as soon as James Cameron's face appeared on screen. The filmmaker, shown in 3D, invited moviegoers to enjoy a 16-minute peek of his anticipated sci-fi epic Avatar, which was screened around the world Friday.

The footage takes viewers to the planet Pandora, where an ex-Marine (Sam Worthington) is among a group of humans who have their brains linked to cloned versions of a native species in order to safely explore the spectacular environment. The screenings, shown on some 440 screens in 58 countries, kept social networking sites abuzz. Cameron said he heard the trailer was a hot topic on Facebook and Twitter, but that he lacks certain social networking skills to take part. "I don't even know how to Twitter," he said.

No. M.N.S.'s movie is. This movie just happened to be called Avatar before M.N.S. started that movie.

I hoping for something more, but so far the plot of the movie looks to be "We're going to infiltrate those dirty aliens." *Some minutes later* "Wow I never thought of these guys as people before!" With a lot of CGI action scenes chucked in to help sell the movie.

Avatar might be largely disappointing. After all, why bother making good movies when you can sell great trailers?

Hahaha Turin, I guess it looks that way eh?
No really though I guess im just one of the few that is really excited to see this movie.

Every forum I find on it, seems like a bunch of haters, or trolls, but i guess im hopeing for another great sci-fi masterpiece.

I know this movie could easily fail, with all the hype, but if Cameron can pull it off, I think were in for a **** of a ride =)

Also if anyone knows where I can find that 16 min trailer I would love a link to check it out. So far all i could find was the 2 min trailer, but it does look juicy.

I'm bumping this old thread up because it's a bit more relevant now, seeing as there's a solid release date, (December 18th) and there's more footage of it out. If I'm not mistaken, this was not released back when the old threads were around. Yes, there were two, I'm posting in this one because it's older.

Mostly I'm just posting because this movie looks great. Like the kind of great where you will never forget it and will want to buy the DVD to show anyone and everyone you know. I know others have bashed it's storyline, computer generated characters, etc., but I still am anticipating this movie possibly more than anything else in a long, long time.

District 9, 9, and now Avatar, all in one year? I'm betting that this will be one of my favorite years for movies for a long while to come.

This is so confusing.. At first, I thought it is Airbender.. I saw the trailer of the last air bender and I thought it was AVATAR.. Now, there is an AVATAR the movie ^^.. but anyway.. These two movies will boom to all kids and to all scifi enthusiast... I can't wait anymore..

Looks pretty garden variety to me. Really there was nothing in any trailer that is particularly innovative.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the other half of failing to do new things is doing old, familiar, and likely enjoyable things. I'm not sure what's so face-meltingly awesome about this plotline though.

Man is sent to infiltrate alien society.
Man falls in love with alien chick.
Man rebels against those who sent him to infiltrate the alien society.

I think this movie will fail miserably. Not that it won't be a good movie, but 10 minutes of searching on Google and I'm fairly certain the hype is too much for it. People have very high expectations and I think it'll fall short. Let's face it, it's a love story set in space. The special effects will most likely convince a lot of dudes to go see it despite the romantic vibes from it, but the sci-fi thing will keep a lot of female viewers from it.

If DiCaprio had played a blue alien man in Titanic, I doubt it would've gotten that many views.

Don't forget he's a cripple. So that makes it "Man overcomes adversary!" How the **** a guy in a wheelchair is a Space Marine is beyond me.

In the future, the military is even more stretched and they will take anyone that wants to join, regardless of physical ability.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but if it's anything like other space marine shows, he might normally use powered armor or something like that, which would not necessarily require functioning legs depending on the type of interface the suit uses.

He's using an avatar, sort of radiocontrolled robot if I'm not mistaken. That's how they explore that planet I believe. If I'm not mistaken though, haven't really spent all that much time in it after seeing the trailer.

I don't have any hopes for this one, but hey, it could surprise me.

I do have higher hopes for "Moon", it's finally out over here and I'm seeing it this tuesday, as the local big cinema complex are overwhelmed with the absolute waste of film that is called Twilight, ofcourse they no longer have space for all that many other movies, so it's in an obscure theater at a ridiculous hour, despite only been out for a week.

Well I for one am genuinely curious about this movie and looking forward to it. I've liked the Aliens movies, and I enjoyed Titanic when I was a young teenie bopper, so I do think that Cameron is a good director. Plot wise it may not be all that innovative but the special effects look very stunning and that by itself is enough to get me to want to see it.

You know, that makes sense from a Hollywood point of view, but my brain just isn't wrapping around it. Even with battle armor, they wouldn't put him out there since it would be a major liability should said equipment break down and he couldn't really deal with it. Its like a blind pilot, or a deaf communications expert. Its just things that don't mesh together. Political correct empowerment always makes me RAGE.

Right, but I think the question was more of a "how was he a space marine before that particular mission?". At least, that's how I interpreted it.

I feel it's sad that in the trailer they have to beat you over the head with Cameron's other films just to try and convince you that seeing Avatar isn't a waste of money.

And the other "Avatar" film is gonna go like DB: Evolution, just wait and see.

True, but I suppose they can either decide not to mind much about handicapped people as they recruit them directly to control robots on a different planet, or he got handicapped whilst on duty and they merely reassigned him.

I suppose we'll see if it's explained soon enough though, despite my reluctance, I'm definitely watching it in a theater though.

It's easy to tell by his hair in the trailer. He was in combat before he was paralyzed, and was either placed on inactive duty or retired; his hair is too long to be military standard in the bar scene.
