I am beginning to become very dissapointed in the recent anime I have been watching. It seems like everything i watch turns out the same. Biggest examples is naruto and bleach. Every single thing in the anime is the same story....the confrontations arent even interesting anymore. It goes something like this. Character gets into a fight, character finds out after 3 episodes that he has to raise himself/herself to her next level. Whatever you want to call it(bankai/technique/ nine tailed fox POWER).

It is just getting ridiculous. What bothers me the most is that its how they try and make fights interesting. Oh i get my *** kicked when im not at my full power, oh **** im getting really beat up, i had better get serious ....BANKAI.....oh when that doesnt work HOLLOW FORM DEPLOY, *** kickery, YES.

So i guess the point of the message is that I need some suggestions that have the same sort of concept of bleach/naruto(by concept i mean action anime...but with actual plots) that does not involve the ridiculous, stupid confrontations when the only change between each fight is the context. Give me something new that actually has content in it, like berserk or hellsing, im tired of searching on my own and ending up with dissapointing wastes of time.

P.S. I think the main problem with these types of anime is that they have dragged on FAR FAR FAR FAR too long, i dont mind 100+ episode long anime. As long as there is a good plot in them and not useless BS. Bleach should have been over when Ichigo saved Rukia from execution.....

sorry /end rant (if thats what you people think this is) but i really do want some good shows that differ from the norm.

G-Gundam: all fights are limited to one episode until the final tournament, then only a few are multiparters.

Have you seen Rurouni Kenshin yet?

Funny that you mention Rouroni because it was the first anime I ever watched and probably the reason i got into it in the first place. When you mentioned fights being only one episode long...thats not what i was trying to get across, i dont mind fights being long, just the fact that alot of main stream anime drags out the fight pointlessly.

Take for example the episode i just watched in bleach...i think it was 222. I cant remember the guys name but i always think of him as fatlips. Hes chubby ,has a very round face and is a complete douche bag. Why the hell did he have to act the complete dumbass until he shows his true "powers" and starts owning the big elaphant hollow? Completely pointless. I understand comedy in anime and even enjoy it, but the only reason why his little blurb in the episode was there was to drag out the fight between the girl captain of the covert ops. and the tiger hollow.

I'm looking for anime that doesnt have stupid crap like that in it. Basically its like this, im looking for anime that does not put content in it for the sole purpose of extending the story line to rake in the money.

The only gundam ive watched is gundam wing which ive been told by many is the best one. It was pretty decent but nothing that blew my socks off. I love huge mecha fightning monsters as much as the next anime watcher so its still pretty damn enjoyable to me.

Actually i think i have caught some of G-gundam(i just remembered at the end of this lol) and in fact, liked it as much or maybe even more than wing(from what i saw of it, maybe 10 episodes). Is it the one with the "king of hearts" as the main character?

You're watching "filler" which is when the animators veer away from the Manga's source material and do whatever they want.

Naruto & Bleach are silly with it & it all sucks.

If you like them, the new Devil May Cry Series is good. I kinda like D Gray Man, but haven't come to a conclusion yet.

Yeah, the King of Hearts is the main character/antagonist from G-Gundam.

Cue The Theme Song!

Claymore is a fairly decent fighting series. What I like about Claymore is that it circumvents the whole "I get stronger as I get more injured/madder," problem that creates good drama but bad logic. In Bleach and Naruto there is no reason the combatants shouldn't go all out from the beginning; it's stupid to ever take it easy on your opponent. Good drama, bad logic. In Claymore there is a reason. The more a character users their youki the more she risks going over the edge and turning into an inhuman monster. So fighting becomes somewhat like a game of chicken, where you want to get as close to the edge as possible to ensure victory without going over and losing yourself.

Berserk is in the same genre as Claymore--dark fantasy/horror--but has a much, much stronger story with real literary merit.

However both Claymore and Berserk have a problem. They are based on manga that extend beyond the 26 episodes produced for the anime. Thus the endings in the anime are rather weak.

Soeed Grapher and Darker than Black are also heavy on the combat, but not quite in the same shounen genre as Naruto and Bleach. They are, however, limited to 26 episodes with a real ending. I tended to like Darker than Black more than Speed Grapher, but did not feel either was too good.

If you want stronger story lines then it would be best to look outside combat anime.

QFT. Omg, so WFT it isn't even funny.

Typically, if a series goes past 90 episodes of anime, it is chock-full of filler. MOST anime series are based on manga, and while the manga may be hundreds of chapters, the anime might only be 24 episodes. And while you miss out on some things, it means that you don't get as much pointless filler, if any. It makes the series enjoyable. Then you get behemoths like Naruto or Dragon Ball. Heck, even Sailor Moon. The entire point of the franchise is continued watching, to sucker fans for every little cent they might have. You buy a DVD with four episodes and realize that you saw half an episode's worth of content and 3 1/2 worth of filler.

Sadly, it extends even past some traditionally non-fighting series, and even into manga. For example, I love the author Ken Akamatsu, author of Love Hina, Mao-Chan, and A.I. Love You. Love Hina is my favorite series of all time. So when I learned a couple years ago about Negima!, a new series, I was really excited! I bought the first few books, and loved that even the "filler" chapters still developed characters (and when your books have a class of like 25 girls, there are a lot of characters to develop). The first 12 or so books were great; my only complaint was that the story was a little slow to shape up.

I now own 22 volumes of Negima. I can safely say that the last 10 or so have been 75% filler. The tiny bit of story development or character interactions keep me coming back. However, since I have found it online, I will NEVER buy another volume. It is a waste of money; heck, the series has turned into a fighting series! It sucks. TOTALLY sucks.

I hate filler and avoid series that have it... to me it marks the downfall of a series. And your specific genre of choice, fighting anime, is probably the worst offender. The best you can hope for is that eventually the series ends and the ending is adequate. That's what I hope for Negima.

I like short animes. Stuff you can watch in a few hours or withing a few days.

They may not be "great" due to the stories not being watered down to make filler episodes.

I own all the FF:U series. It is kind of cool, then gets kid of sloppy at the end as the ending is rushed.

FLCL is always good, funny and goofy and full of lulz.

And I just picked up Afro Samurai. Only a few hours long, but still neat.

But I enjoy some old longer series.

Tri-gun, DB and DBZ (gt is gay), Most of the gundam series, and Rurouni Kenshin is a fav too.

Locke, I hear you on negima. I think the problem is more though that Akamatsu made a series with 20+ characters, and each gets their role. Just having to document all that adds a ton of volumes to the series. I own 21 of them, I just stopped at 22. It's just too large in scope.

Lowgo, I'd try more episodic anime like Cowboy bebop, heat guy J, and samurai Champloo. Any anime not based on manga usually has much less filler and more original story.

Funny enough, LockeColeMA's mention of Ken Akamastu made me think of Kenshiro. Maybe you should watch "Fist of the North Star".

Oh no, I agree with that. And I'd be fine... IF it was all character development. But it's become a fighting manga. He fights on the school trip. He fights at the school festival. He fights when he gets to the magical world. He spends three books fighting IN the magical world (that's what books 23-25 are, btw). In between all of that is a bit of plot advancement and character development, which I really like. But then it's back to the fighting which, although cool, is very repetitive after a while. In the most recent volumes I have read, Negi basically becomes a Super Saijin Negi, complete with longer hair. It's becoming a little sad (not like "tug at the heart strings" sad, but "Wait, I thought this was Negima, not DBZ" sad).

I'll keep reading the series when it becomes available online, but I'm SO glad I read the next few volumes before they were released in North America, because I would have wasted my money otherwise.

Edit: Haha, see, totally worth keeping up to date to see scenes like THIS:

I agree and disagree to be honest. To be fair, a lot of the manga we read are meant for kids. Although kids aren't stupid, there does tend to be a bit of simplicity in their series. Harry Potter comes to mind as main example even if not having anything to do with anime or manga.

A series is created, the hero is confronted with drama and foes but you have to keep the foes interesting and challenging. You either create flaws in the hero to have foes that can present a challenge or just create foes that are stronger to 'force' the hero to grow too. Or just add a new repertoire for the hero to use, a bit like in Rurouni Kenshin. (real shame they overdid the fillers and killed the anime, I would have loved to have seen the manga story continue. Still, season two is great and the OVA's are too)

There's not all that much variety in it, never has. It's comparable to the US sunday cartoons, the likes of He-Man or GI Joe or heck even Scooby Doo.

There are some that try to break the mold and try something new, I wouldn't use Claymore as an example as that too is just the same in a different shape.

Still a shame Zetman isn't an anime though, there's definitely something different about that series.

And ofcourse, there's the old truth: a lot of wat is created is mediocre and a rip-off. It makes us enjoy the truly good stuff even more!

Wow, thank you all for the huge input. I really appreciate it. I'm glad some people understand my frustration of having to wade through all the crap to find the good stuff.

I think the best advice was probably not watching anything too long.

Im kind of tentative towards moving away from anime based on manga. Some of it turns out to be extremely good. Also as someone mentioned some anime based of manga's ending me rushed/poor. I usually just read the manga after if i really enjoyed the anime. Sometimes its even better than the anime. Like berserk.

I cant remember who the artist is but the detail he puts into his work is incredible.

I hear you when ziev mentioned character growth as the whole finding new challenges to overcome....but its just ridiculous......in most cases I frame it like this...what would have happened to Goku if he had to face Buu instead of radick(not sure on the name but Goku's brother) in the first 20 episodes of DBZ...It makes absolutely no sense for bad guys to just randomly grow a little bit stronger every time the protagonist gets stronger.

Yes i know in some instances it can make sense, but cmon, seriously....in 90% of the anime out there it just...doesnt.
Take for example...Baki the grappler. I actually enjoyed this anime immensely. It made sense that Baki would search out stronger opponents each time he got stronger so as to get that much closer to his father, it made sense for his opponents in tournements to get stronger after each fight.

I guess what im just trying to say is that i like anime that is logical in their methods of producing dramatic sequences of conflict.

I'm going to suggest D. Gray Man it's kind of like Naruto and bleach where there's action BUT there's only like 100 episodes atm and only 2 times where the main character gets super strong and what not.

the storys also a lot more constant instead of Evil villain 1 died but evil villain 2 just appeared and a secret evil villain 3 who was rly evil villain 1 is back and ready for action!!!

Also gotta a lot of funny/sad/ZOMG WHAT!!!???? parts

I think the only downside is the begining of the anime starts kind of slowish it spends a lot of time getting side characters in and explaining the plot and stuff (which can still be good i guess but some people think it's slow)

Just a little information about D. Gray Man, the manga is still going. So if you're looking for a more finite series then it is probably not your best choice.

that sucks then. I mean, 22 volumes and we still have no idea who fate averruncus is or what he intends? I think 22 kind of hinted to me what you said..yet another tournament, another "master."

And of course he has to waste countless pages on fan service. So even less space to work with. And negima really isn't that good a fighter manga.

How can you be disappointed in Bleach and Naruto? It was fairly obvious from the first dozen episodes that it was going to be just another DBZ clone. At least with One Piece its the same thing, but so ridiculously over the top that its entertaining.

The One Piece Anime is shit.

The Anime Dub is the biggest pile of shit I have ever witnessed grace a TV screen.

And I once watched an entire episode of According to Jim.

Still no real idea about Fate, except he has his own harem of partners as well. You learn more about the war, and a bit about Asuna (it seems like Negi figures out exactly who she is and what role she plays but never reveals it). Fan service is always fun :-P Actually, the new "Negi Neo" series is a fan-service-less version of the current story, I believe.
