... and all I can think is "If Stephen King did manga, this would be the result." But then I thought, isn't The Dark Tower getting turned into a manga anyway?

I can't tell if I like the series or not. The random cameos are ok, but most are lost on me; all I really get are the Chobits and Card Captor Sakura ones. The plot was silly and predictable for the first half, and then all of the sudden there are several of the same people and I'm left going "Whuuu?" And a bunch of people seem to flit in just for the sake of being there before disappearing again (the vampire twins and the treasure hunters, for example). Part of me thinks these folks will have some explanation before the end of the series, but another part thinks they're simply there for Clamp readers to go "Oooo!"

Either way it's a quick read and pretty interesting after the midpoint. I'm guessing the series is still unfinished? I've read up to chapter 210, and while it seems to be winding down it definitely just stops in the middle of the action.

Edit: I think I might understand a little more if I read "X" and "xxxHOLIC"? Yes or no?

A little bit. The witch from xxxHolic and from Tsubasa are the same character, but xxxHolic primarily covers a completely separate side of her business.

I watched season 1 and 2 of the anime, but gave up on it. The story seems to largely be "adventure of the day," plots with some small amount of continuous storyline woven in to maintain the illusion of the non-filler plots.

I would imagine it would be like that. I think the manga is still being published in Japan, and the first 60+ chapters of the manga were exactly what you described the anime being. When they start getting to the main characters' pasts, it gets a bit cooler (Fai's especially).

Well I a month or two ago I actually checked out a chapter of the manga just to see where the story was. They were doing a race, which appeared to be yet another adventure of the day plot. This is an element common in a lot of Clamp series.

If I remember correctly that's the second to last world where they do silly side-quests. I think the next one is Tokyo, where acid rain is falling and some characters from X show up. The end of that arc is when it really starts getting interesting (and confusing).

(A few minutes later)

Just looked up where you said they were in the series. Around chapter 80 is the city in the sky. The next one is a library world where you learn Kurogane's past (which is kinda neat) and see a little more of the "other" Syaoran. The world after that is Tokyo, where the story starts to turn a little darker and more involved. There are still some of the same elements as before ("recover feathers!") but by the time Tokyo's arc ends the main story is more like "Who exactly are these kids?"

So, yeah, that's around chapter 110, and I've read to 210 so far.

TRC is CLAMP writing fanfiction out of their own material, which is their right, but the result is still better than most non-CLAMP written CLAMP fanfiction, so it all works out in the end. It's not just X and xxxHolic that help in understanding it; you'd best start from RG Veda and read on in order to make sure you don't miss cameos from obscure characters.

It doesn't help that X is has been "to be continued" for a decade now Smiley: crymore

A bump, although this was only on page 2 since this forum moves so slowly...

So I just caught up to chapter 228, the most recent (I think) chapter. The series is winding down, and I'm enjoying it. Points of interest:

1. Action scenes are incredibly confusing in this series. I tend to just skip them, as I have NO idea what is going on.
2. There's a whole "I am my own grandpa" thing going on with Syaoran. I THINK it goes roughly like this: Syaoran at the beginning of the series is a clone. So is Sakura, for that matter. He shares an eye with the real Syaoran, who is a prisoner to Fei Wong Reed in return for allowing the real Sakura to be frozen in time before she is marked for death. Eventually the real Syaoran breaks out, while the clone Syaoran gets controlled by Reed. A hundred chapters later, it comes out that:
A) The clone was created by Reed when he captured the original Syaoran.
B) The clone is eventually reincarnated, with his memories intact, and meets, marries, and has a child with the clone Sakura (who was also reincarnated). This reincarnation happens at the point when Reed decides they are no longer useful, but they are saved by Yuko right before they disappear.
C) Their child is the real Syaoran.

3. I have a pretty good handle on the Syaoran thing, but I'm a little lost on how Sakura/clone Sakura relate to each other. I guess the original Sakura is just another dimension's version of Syaoran's mother? Who is, actually, a clone of that Sakura anyway?
4. How does Cardcapter Sakura fit into this? I think I missed that part.
5. Following points 2 and 3, doesn't that mean that CLAMP really likes incest?

Anyone else keeping up with the series?

The series is over!

And I have NO idea what happened in the end. None. Nada. I can't figure it out. I -think- that one Syaoran and the black-haired kid from xxxHOLIC sacrificed themselves so the other could live. Or something. I really don't get it. I'm also not sure what it meant when Syaoran got Sakura's feather at the end.
