Ok so here is the idea behind this thread.

If you could enter any one of your favorite sci-fi/fantasy novels as if it where the next great mmo, which one would it be? What race/class would you choose to play?

I would choose to be in the Death Gate Cycle Universe.

And wouldnt you know, I would roll a necromancer. The developers would have to figure out how I could be a necromancer without killing off other players of the game. It was said in the series that "For every life restored, another dies untimely,". Although perhaps this could be an interesting way to destroy my enemies =).

Ok, I'm bored so I'll bite.

Shadowrun. Either a Street Samurai or the Hacker class.

Forgotten Realms.

It's so freaking huge you could have endless expansions, each would be able to have a rich theme.

Never going to happen but it would work if right company got the rights.

The Great book of Amber. Would be interesting as every possible surroundings is something that can be created in that world. I have no idea how they can create such a world though, but would be very fun.

I'ld go with being a son of Amber naturally, although starting at the Courts of Chaos would be fun as well.

If not Amber, I'ld go with the Dune world.

David Weber's Honorverse, and playing a RMN officer. Anne McCaffry's Pern, a green or blue rider.

To be honest, with the world created by Frank Herbert, there is a heck of a lot to do. Plenty of different factions that can either work together or against each other, the hunt for spice, lots of villains,... A sort of medieval high tech world, it would be rather fun imo.

Other than Shadowrun, which I would love to play as a MMO, I wouldn't mind a Shannara MMO.

As far as restoring life, it sounds like Everquest and Essence Emeralds. Necromancers can create an essence emerald by casting a spell which causes another lvl 45+ character to voluntarily take a non-resurrectable death (i.e. experience loss). Then the emerald can later be used to resurrect a character.

So someone has to die before a necromancer can restore someone else's life.

Babylon 5. Adding races could expand the game endlessly. Once the orignal races are fully flushed out add the Rim and new area and races. Set up a story like quest system ala LoTR online around the orginal series and to me this would be the greatest MMO of all time.

The Dragon Riders or Pern MMO has potential but would be very hard to get right. At release focus on the northern land mass. the first 2 expantions could cover the southern area and the satalite and red star.

A George Romero Zombie MMO would be fun as well. Center it on a city ala land of the dead and run missions out into the wastes.

Back in the day I used to play a couple of MUDs.. basically if you don't know, they were a MMORPG but completely text based. Sort of like 'playing' a book...

One was based off of LotR (which there is already a MMORPG of). The other was based off of the Wheel of Time. While I liked LotR story more I always thought that WoT's universe worked MUCH better in-game.

As far as races go, you're basically screwed because everyone is pretty much human (unless you're able to play as the badguys...but I'm thinking no on that part). However there are many regions/countries which would set people apart. Pick a Shienaran and choose from your different top-knot hairstyles. Pick Aiel and have proficiencies in Spear and run faster, but use no horses etc.

For Jobs.. wow. There were the Asha'man and Aeis-Sedai (male and female magic users). There were gleemen and thieves. Fighters were a-plenty, not to mention the end-all be-all of fighters the Blademasters who had various Sword Forms to use in battle.

As far as factions go, there was of course the Dark whoever (been awhile) in charge of the baddies. There was also an army of good people, the Asha'man group and the Aes-sedai group (who were opposed to one another..long story), the Aiel (think native americanish), the Whitecloaks (Religious Zealots), and some powerful people who had just invaded from across the sea (forgot their name >.<).

A few things they would need to figure out how to implement... Wolf Brothers (special people who can communicate with the wolves and travel the 'sleep world'.. very rare people), Dark Friends (they seem good people but actually work for the badguys) and the fact that the more the Asha'man use thier powers the greater the chance for them to become crazy.

Overall its just a huge world that begs to be turned into an MMORPG!! *crosses his fingers*

While i understand the zeal, i just can't see how WoT would make a good MMO, not much in the way of questlines to do and no none human player races might pose a problem aswell.

I think with a massive twist on faction based country Vs Country it might have a chance...

The PnP roleplaying sucked though...

Dragaera (as in the Steven Brust's setting for the Vlad Taltos stories). I'll play a Dragonlord (aka Morollan).

Yes. This.

The problem is there is very little in the Pern series that would contribute to PVE conflict. You fight Thread. Then you fight some more Thread. Oh, look, there's the occasional wherrie. Now you fight Thread again.

I can see it as a platform game, but not an MMO. It might have a bit more to offer for PVP conflict, but it's not really a world of varied enough dangers that it lends itself well to MMO-type conflict.

No, really, they should, it could work so well.
