Pick up Katherine Kerr's Deverry books or Kate Elliots Crown of Stars series, there a pretty good read.

I have like 12 of them in German. I bet there are less in the original ;)
And I really liked them!

Guess I will have to update the list soon.

Ok, so I have read through this whole thread. I am not one to brag about the sheer volume of material I have read. It is distasteful. Lets just suffice it to say I have a Bachelor of Arts, major in ENglish Literature. >.<

My overall attitude about literature is: Quality, no Quantity. I really dont give a rats fart hole how many books you read or are trying to read. I care about the quality of the reader's experience. Things like retention and revelation are more important to me than volume...

Some writes of note that I know some of the elitist snobs will no doubt disagree on that should be on Every Sci-Fi/Fantasy readinglist:

Ray Bradbury (Martian Chronicles)
Issac Asmiov (Robots and Foundation)
Robert A. Heinlein (read the whole catalogue :))
Stephen King (Dark Tower)
Orson Scott Card (Alvin and Ender)
Stephen R. Donaldson (Thomas Covenant)
Larry Niven
David Brin
Stephen Brust

ok, I am going to stop now. I have made a short list for people who cant get past the paper back racks at the local grocery/drug stores. You may have to do some research and may have to special order some of the books available by the above mentioned authors... good things are worth working for.

I got nothing against the authors you mentioned. I will read some of the stuff which I am not sure about. Other stuff I know or have read. Heck I may read some of the drivel regardless of my opinion... I just get so turned off by the flavour of the week crap in local stores >.<

yeah quantity seems like a false goal to me. If i was going fo quantity i would narrow the field to american classics or something i would like to learn more about, say a hobby or career

I recommend for a change of pace you try SM Stirling's "Snowbrother" The whole 5th millennium series was good but this one gives you an idea of what a real barbarian lives like.

Another one for anyone that likes alternate history novels done right is "Island in the Sea of Time" and its two sequels. Hands down the best alternate history I have ever read.

Also you should try Riddlemaster of Hed by Patricia A. Mckillip. Excellent series.

Next look for "The Legend of Nightfall" by Miriam Susan Zucker Reichert. One of my favorite rogue characters ever written is in there.

Finally look for anything by DAVID GEMMELL. This guy is one of the best fantasy authors left in the business. His stories are ok but it’s the way he writes his characters that attracts me. He can make you feel what they feel with his words. That is real talent.

I've probably read less than 50 books in the past year.

But then again what I did read was Milton (Paradise Lost), Dante (The Divine Comedy), Hardy (Tess and the Mayor of Castebridge), Chaucer (Canterbury Tales),
Lol be careful YSU if you add in "G.W.Bush: a conspiricy theory" and "Explosives 101", and you probably have MI6 knocking your door down.

I don't know you but I am very proud of you. I love books, they are far better than anything on the television.

Our last move consisted of 6 huge boxes of books (house mover sized)

I know this is SCI-FI/Fantasy but please read "Angelas Ashes" By Frank McCourt. It was a fantastic novel and if you like it, check out "Tis" and "Teacherman".

For historical fiction try Phillipa Gregory - Henry the VII period books "The Queens Fool" , "The Other Boylyn Sister".

That would possibly be:
Master of the Five Magics
Secret of the Sixth Magic
Riddle of the Seven Realms

by Lyndon Hardy.

I read the first two many years ago (late 80s), I never got around to the third one.

I personally make it a goal to read at least 200,000 pages in a year and at least 200-300 books. I have no life lol so I have a lot of time on my hands. Usually I chrush it but recently I've developed a social life so I'm losing time.

I, too, encourage quality over quantity. And certainly more variety than your list indicates. You should be reading some non-sci-fiction and some nonfiction.

I've been keeping a list of the books I read since 1995 (I'm 42 years old). I usually read about 25 books a year. About half is fiction, and about half the fiction is SF. I recommend you read some classic SciFi--try some of the Hugo & Nebula award winners.

Allow me to recommend a few nonfiction titles:

The Birth of Time--How We Measured the Age of the Universe by John Gribbin

Wonderful Life--The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History by Stephen Jay Gould

Finding Darwin's God--A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution by Kenneth Miller

The Prize--The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power by Daniel Yergin

A Walk in the Woods--Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
