I'm at a complete loss... not sure what to do.

As I said before, my motherboard fried. I'm currently working out of town for another week, but home tonight to take care of some things. I decided to order another motherboard, but there lies the issue. The processor I have (Athlon 64x2) was a bit revolutionary at it's time when dual core processors were just coming about. The motherboard I have now isn't produced anymore, and I can't find a single new motherboard that both supports my CPU and has 4 slots for RAM. I now have three choices: 1) order a compatible motherboard and cut down from 4GB of RAM down to 2GB; 2) order a compatible motherboard and new 2x2GB of RAM; 3) say f*ck it and just build a new system.

#2 is my most realistic option, since all I really do is play FFXI and this system already runs it beautifully, but it seems to be a rather large investment ($250 or so) when I could build an entirely new, top-of-the-line system for around $800-1000 (option #3). #1 would be a cheap alternative (about $100) but would cut my performance quite a bit. #3 is the most tempting option, but there's probably better things I could be spending my money on. It would also mean that I wouldn't have a PC for a couple of more weeks, since I don't have time to research parts and order them until I'm done being a farmboy.

/sigh

The obvious answer is to start with option #2, and then #3 when you have more money. It's not like you can't just upgrade one or two things at a time.

I say go #1, and see how much of a hit your performance takes.

If acceptable with 2Gb, save up money and build new system.

If unacceptable, buy new RAM and then save up money and build new system.

If drunk, build new system. (Then have another beer)

Thing is, I guess the new system that Chew is envisioning will likely not be based off the same types of components. All the cool kids use intel i7's nowadays, and even if sticking with AMD it may be a different socket. I have no idea what sockets AMD's use. Plus I'd imagine Chew wants DDR3, which wouldn't be supported by this mobo I'm guessing its DDR2 by price and age.

Exactly. This processor is AM2, and anything made in the last 2-ish years is AM3. There are some boards that support all of AM2/AM2+/AM3, but from what I've seen they are drastically lacking in performance compared to AM3-dedicated boards.

I'm not even sure if I should stick with Athlon or not. I've always loved them in the past for the ease of overclocking, and in recent years Athlon has made it even easier by giving overclocking options in the included BIOS. On the other hand, Intel is beating them out performance-wise (out of the box, anyways). And yes, I currently use DDR2 and would want to upgrade to DDR3... even though after 4+ years of being out, I still haven't seen evidence of significant differences between DDR2 and DDR3. I see that frequency speeds have increased for DDR3 recently though, so I could be wrong.

As for i7? Jesus those things are expensive.

I realised after I posted that i7 don't really fit in with your system cost from #3.

Thing is, if you get a mobo with AM3 or LGA1156, you are pretty much going to have to get DDR3 whether you like it or not.

I initially had an Asus P5b with an C2D E8200, which had a whole bunch of overclocking options, more than I ever used. My replacement (and current board) is the Asus Maximus Extreme with a Q9550 on overclocked to 3.4GHz. Again there are more overclocking options than I have ever learnt to use. I think most boards which are above ****** tend to have at least minimal overclocking options.

Interesting... it would actually be cheaper to upgrade my processor than to replace my RAM! A last-gen Athlon quad core for $70! It's socket AM2+, which means finding a 4xDDR2 motherboard would be easy. I think I found my solution. Smiley: cool

Ordered. Processor, motherboard, heatsink and paste for $200. Not bad, considering it's a considerable upgrade when I was expecting to pay $100-120 to just replace mobo.
