You do realize that like 99.9% of religious folks in the western world don't have a problem with this, right? But the .1% is the group that is paraded on your TV as an example for you to think is the norm somehow.

It's not.

I don't think the Ken Hamm's of the world are normal, just loud. Thanks Captain Obvious!

I guess the good thing is of those that agree with Evolution, fewer are believing in the whole "Intelligent Design" thing.

Hahahahahahah. Ahhh. Based on fucking what? Your experience with Jesuits? Go hang out in Oklahoma for a month. Yes, I realize in what you think was a clever turn of phrase, you posted "western world" so as fold in Europe, but you are still wildly wrong.

I spent a turn once with Gbaji frantically insisting that a poll showing 44% of people saying "The Earth was formed in six days as described in Genesis" meant anything BUT a belief in literal Six Day creationism.

I still contend that there's not much "intelligent" in this design.

The article about the poll probably left off the last half of the question "Or do you think we should round up and kill all the Jews? A or B?"

Then why broadly speak about "those that are religious" if you really meant just a small subset of those people?

There's a whole heck of a lot of science other than evolution. You get that, right? Presumably all of religious folks of the past that Omega was talking about, and how they were able to get past their religious views and do good science probably would have answered the same way to that question. Yet, amazingly, it didn't make them non-scientific in their respective fields. Perhaps you should think about why that is, and it might just dawn on you why obsessing over creation vs evolution is a really crappy way to determine how smart or scientific a group of people actually are.

Social pressure. Was this a trick question? The answer is so amazingly obvious. They pretended to be religious to fit in . No one trained in the scientific method can the idea of a specific God even vaguely seriously. I'm sure some small subset of people also felt a sort of noblesse oblige to carry on the charade because they saw religion as a net positive for the little people.

I can't imagine why people would lie about their religious belief during an era that tortured and set fire to people for their beliefs.

Driving home today, the radio mentioned that the water analysis from the surface of the comet revealed the water to be different than that on Earth. Of course they say it turns the scientific world upside down... (don't agree with that, think it's just something being said to sensationalize the mediocre media value of the findings).

Rosetta has found that its comet has about three times more "heavy" water than Earth (water with deuterium instead of hydrogen). Another Kuiper Belt comet was found to match Earth's percentage of heavy water about perfectly. If you were to average the two, you'd say that Earth's water couldn't have come from Kuiper Belt comets because we'd have more heavy water than we do. In fact, Rosetta's comet would have to be in a distinct minority to still allow the math to work.

Really, we're working with a very small sample size of Kuiper Belt comets so we don't know what the average composition is yet. Or the bulk of the ice was provided by some other means such as asteroids. Or it came from a small number of comets overall that fit the composition. Or something else. It doesn't change the basic idea that water on earth came from extra-terrestrial sources, just keeps the door open on what the source was.

One can't rule out god entirely simply because you cant' prove a negative, but there is no proof of a 'specific' god - none. It's not only scientists over the ages that have fooled themselves for the sake societal acceptance, it was anyone with a lick of sense.
