Netherlands is playing with a winger as left back, an old one at that.
Not a while lot of opportunities one way or the other though, no real chances yet for either team after 30 minutes.

Argh! Dutch fumbling after the Chilean defense lost their way for a minute.

Almost as if it were a meaningless game and neither side gave a ****.

It's a lot more meaninful than it seems. Winning means facing teams like Croatia, Mexico and Costa Rica rather than Brazil, Italy and Germany.

The hell. Did he see an ex girlfriend in the stands and tried to kill her? That certainly wasn't a shot at the goal.

Also 90s Neon Orange is a horrible color.

Still nice we get to get Group B out of the way first. Since people there have to least to play for.

Boom.

Elegant it ain't but it does work for us.
Doesn't hurt that the only Chilean over 1m80 is the goalie and half the Dutch team is closer to 1m90 than 1m80.

Now they just need to get a grip again and stop defending so panicky.

They'll be fine, nobody ever scores in the last couple minutes anyway, right?

RIGHT?!

The most read article on the BBC site when I went there this morning was "In pictures: US football heartbreak." Smiley: lol

This thread is the only place I'm getting my World Cup news from, but my understanding is the US is still in the running, no? I mean, they're doing better than anyone expected which I guess is something.

We have a decent chance of making the knockout round of the tournament; which is pretty good for us.

Both Germany and the US are through with a draw so neither is going to take any risks I think. There's simply no reason to so if the US has a solid defense Germany probably won't press too hard.

Also Löw and Klinsmann are good friends, for what that is worth.

Also, while no one is "afraid" of Portugal per se, there's no reason to make it possible for them to make it to the next stage and then have to face the prospect of C Ronaldo taking over a game. Not many players can actually do that, and he's probably not completely fit, but still...chancing Clint Dempsy taking over a game sounds a lot more palatable.

The biggest fear being that Germany dinks in an extra goal for insurance and Ghana decides they want to beat the snot out of Portugal. Smiley: frown

I'm expecting both teams to be busy not losing rather than winning and Dempsey is barely a factor against Germany in that situation.

No, obviously, I meant no one thinks "we should beat this team now so we don't have to face Dempsy in the quarters" where you might consider that with Ronaldo.

I doubt Germamy is at all concerned about Portugal, it's mostly that a draw is safe and leading against the US leads to a full offense by them and then crazy things can happen.

Crazy things can happen, sure, but I don't really see Portugal as much of a risk right now. A 5-point swing is enough to be a difficult task at least, especially since Ghana has plenty to play for too.

Oh, they'll beat Ghana by 4.
