Primarily because we stigmatize mental health treatment as a society, particularly amongst the populations most likely to be violent. Most people seeking mental health treatment are women and children, by a ludicrous margin. Adult males receiving mental health treatment are frequently doing so against their will via court ordered treatment. Which, as an aside, works surprisingly well. The whole "you have to want to be helped" thing appears to be complete *********

Approached from a more big picture perspective it really is simpler.
In the event of a large scale "incident" what worse thing could there be for a controlling body than than a lot of people armed to the teeth? The nature of the entire struggle is that it is simply easier to let the government take care of you in the event of a disaster. The quicker then can get the guns the easier it would be for them to maintain. The more people with guns means the more people that are likely to cause trouble if society really broke down for any reason. I'm imagining what would it would have been like in US if a 311 type tsunami hit here. The smartest thing for them to do would be to round them up.

I agree that we should, but I was specifically commenting on the violent ways that many men deal with their issues and the fact that as a society, we are largely ignoring it. Women aren't immune to mental illness, but the percentage of women taking out their anger by raping and beating other people is low.

"The mental health of men" is slightly generalizing, though. And I don't think we, as a society, are ignoring it. It's not like beating and raping people is legal for us men. At least not in the more civilized parts of the world.

I also don't think we're ignoring it. Domestic violence has experienced a massive increase in awareness and action over the last several decades. Some would argue that we may even be going too far with this when it comes to sex and stereotypes about this form of violence. I suspect that domestic violence committed by women is far more under reported today than that committed by men. I'm not saying that men don't commit violence, nor that they shouldn't be punished for it, but that the stereotypical assumption that it's always the man beating the woman is something we really ought to get over.
