Relevant: A dad's three year old daughter was playing old school Donkey Kong and wanted to play as Pauline and rescue Mario. Her father redid all the sprites and some of the other graphics just for her.

Reading the entire article got me a little choked up. What a fantastic father. He also gets a parenting award for giving up on trying to interest his son in video games. I think one of the conclusions he came to out of the whole experience is very relevant:
Quote:
Having kids is incredible. And having a daughter is something special. I get the opportunity to see the world through her eyes. And if this experience has taught me anything, it’s that the world could be just a bit more accommodating. And that if something as innocuous as having Mario be saved by Pauline brings out the crazy, maybe we aren’t as mature in our view of gender roles as we should be.

That's a perfect example of turning the trope on its head. Why can't the woman rescue the man? Why are there 500 big, tough male characters for every 1 big, tough female characters?

Easier to market to the demographic that buys the most console games.

I don't really see the reverse as "turning the trope on its head" though. Female game heroes barely elicit a raised eyebrow these days.

Limited demand? Post #99 or #120.

*shrugs* I'd still play it though. Now that I think of it, it's been a long time since I played a game that didn't let you choose your sex during character creation.

WoW, D3, SWTOR, TERA, Skyrim, Dragon Age, Sims... was it seriously FFXII? Smiley: confused There were a couple in there where you didn't choose anything, but you wouldn't know if you were male or female anyway. Wow, I obviously need to play more video games... Smiley: frown

The issue is that most of the female stars aren't rescuing their trapped boyfriends. They are having kickass adventures, but they can't have canon boyfriends because that would ruin the male fantasy aspect.

So in order for it to not be sexist we now have to have strong, but not too strong, pretty, but not too pretty, sexy, but not too sexy female lead roles who have to be rescuing their tough boyfriends?

Personally, I think having strong female characters is enough. It eliminates the idea that the female in the game HAS to be attached in some way to a male character.

I so much prefer the Mass Effect (and Skyrim) model where you have your companions and you can choose to have a romance develop between them while having kick *** adventures where you save the world.

I prefer the Skyrim model where your female companion sighs deeply and passive-aggressively ******* every time you ask her to do so much as hold an arrow for you. Prepares today's young males for what lies ahead in life.

I don't usually travel with any companions, but when I need to for a quest it never fails, they always walk right in front of me and then ***** when my arrow catches them in the throat.

I prefer the Skyrim model where your female companions are large breasted nude bimbos that follow you around or go to the bath house and play with the large breasted nude hostess. Prepares today's young males for what lies ahead in life.

Thinking about it in those terms is profoundly unhelpful.

Trying to watch through the video, it strikes me that she would have been well served to take some of that hundred-plus large and spend it on a (semi)professional writer and a (semi)professional narrator. Granted, she'd have to give up her chance to proselytize in person but she is not an engaging or interesting speaker and manages to turn listening about video games into a chore.

Right, and every Husband on every sitcom is a fat functionally retarded guy interested only in cooking meat and watching sports.

We had to make Hannah a custom Minecraft Halloween head because there's is one female character in the game.

She's a witch.

Close. She's stuck in a hut with a cauldron and a potted mushroom. In a swamp.

I'll admit I know nothing about Minecraft. Any time I see a Minecraft "person" it's the dude in the turquoise shirt and five o'clock shadow who looks like a computer from 1995 just took a shit.
