Disney buys LucasFollow

...and almost everything they owned. That's Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and all their tech.

New Star Wars movie to come in 2015, first of three announced films, with more to follow afterwards.

Lucas sold it for 4 bil, 50% of which he pockets himself in cash, with another 50% in Disney stock.

Not sure what to make of this. Lucas was doing a pretty good job of ******* all over his own creations...can Disney exploiting them really be that much worse?

But ****. Disney owns everything.

EDIT: Additional details from conference call:

Goal is 1-2 Marvel movies a year.

Disney's understanding is that Lucas is retiring.

Just saw this explode on facebook too.

I don't much care either way, honestly. Never was a huge Star Wars fanatic, and most of those I know who were hated the new episodes.

More or less my sentiment as well. When you run out of steam you might as well sell the franchise and enjoy your twilight years on your own Hawaiian island or something.

I'd have to know more about an Episode 7 before making a judgement call on it. I'm not opposed to it in principle or anything, but I've never saw all of the recent 3 films or either.

I've enjoyed pretty much all of the Disney Marvel movies, and I would think that if Star Wars is given the same treatment, I'll be happy.

I think most people that are upset are old farts like me that were there, standing in line when Ep. 4 was released. Those first three movies were amazing for the time. Then Lucas got all nutty and somehow messed up much of his own creation.

I'll be interested to see what Disney does with it, but I'll still want them to get the **** off my lawn.

That's my feeling. I liked the original movies well enough and played with the toys. Then I turned ten and it stopped being an important part of my life.

Power to Lucas for making bank though.

Lucas already blazed the trail of exploiting the Star Wars franchise for all it was worth, both via the three prequels to the Holy Trilogy and through various cartoons, mini-movies, and other media. So long as they don't try to remake the original movies, I'm pretty indifferent.

Maybe they'll release a remastered Ewok Christmas special from the Disney vault!

So I see some possible mashup issues. "When You Wish Upon a Star" probably shouldn't play in any scenes where the Deathstar is powering up.

I'm withholding judgement for now. I think with the right talent, they can do a good job. I think that Episode One overstayed its welcome a bit on the Podracing, but I really didn't mind and even liked Episode Two and Three.

Yeah. I'm also in the "thought they were pretty decent" category when it comes to episodes 1-3. Sure, Jar Jar was annoying, but there's a certain symmetry to having him be responsible for the downfall of the Republic, and the Ewoks responsible for the downfall of the Empire. Equally silly IMO, but there you have it. And to be fair, the biggest thing everyone was waiting for (the fight between Obi Wan and Vader) did not disappoint. The trilogy was somewhat predictable, but then we had so much canon that you knew what happened, it was just a matter of showing it and filling in the details. I personally had no problem with that.

There are a ton of post Empire stories that could be done, and if Disney is interested in doing them, that's great.

They can always use Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy for these movies; that's the popular sentiment.

The best thing about those Ewoks is the knowledge that all that exploded Death Star debris had to eventually fall somewhere.

If they did the first three Timothy Zahn books as episode 7 8 and 9, I'd watch them. i can see the scripts going horribly wrong though, and they are going to have to bring in new actors at this point.

They'll most likely do the next three as animated films like the Clone Wars series. Hopefully Pixar would be doing it, and not whoever decided on the Thunderbirds look.

Yeah if it's the Zahn trilogy, I'm actually kind of excited.

That's what we hoped for for the "three new movies" back in the 90s. Then it turned out to be the prequils and I had a sad.

For those who are confused about the "Zahn Trilogy" - Timothy Zahn was one of the pioneering authors of the Star Wars extended universe, and his first three books, about the tattered remnants of the Empire and the fledgling emergence of the New Republic, set the gold standard for the rest of the written universe. Sadly, every other book in the extended universe (with the exception of some of the X-Wing books, perhaps) is vastly inferior. Frankly, some of them completely suck.

About the only other ones that might be cool are the young Han Solo books (the second trilogy for him, not the first one from the 80s.)

If it's any of the books from Kevin J Anderson, I quit.

I thought Lucas said a while back that he'd already had all nine planned out. Wouldn't that mean we're likely not looking at works from another author?

You're all thinking in the wrong direction with Star Wars characters in Disney/Marvel games.

The next Star Wars movie will be cast entirely with Disney Channel stars. Selena Gomez as Leia, the kids from Suite Life as Luke & Han, some token black kid as token Lando, maybe they'll bring in a washed-up post-expiration date star like Hilary Duff back to act as the wizened battle commander.

I'd be happy to go and see a movie made from those books as well. They were a high point in the sea of all stuff Star Wars, and the only ones I've finished. Happy times from my youth with those and the X-wing PC games. Smiley: grin
