From what I've heard, Obama asked Petraeus to stay on but Petraeus was set on resigning. Whether it was an honor thing or a family thing or feeling he was compromised or what, who knows.

For one thing, Petraeus is respected by both sides of the aisle (he was the commanding general in Iraq for GWB) so this isn't like the GOP salivating to attack Eric Holder. For another thing, Congress can subpoena him to testify even if he's a private citizen. Still, I guess the "He had to take a dive to protect Obama from scandal" line fits some people's narrative better than the reality.
