I'm 99.99999% positive that had the statement been made by a Democrat, it would not have been reported, Joph would never have heard about it, and if he had, he would not have chosen to post it. The (R) was very deliberate. And it's why the original article was written, why it was quoted and repeated by another source, and why Joph decided to post it.
