The theory goes that the desired 18-35 voting demographic also happens to be the same demographic that plays Halo. Since it's been five years since players have been able to play a Halo game featuring Master Chief (the last two games, Halo: ODST and Halo:Reach, starred other protagonists), the excitement over the game could prove so distracting that they'll forget to vote.

This is my favorite conspiracy theory since somebody Photoshop'd the wrecked airplane out of the Pentagon.

Because early voting isn't a thing, right?

If people want to vote, they're going to vote. Someone releasing a videogame isn't going to drastically change the course of an election. Period.

In before the voting booths are moved to every Best Buy and Game Stop available.

I can't see it having any measurable effect. Boy, it's been so long since I played a game good enough to seriously affect my social life and productivity. Smiley: frown

I'd think the hardcore twenty-something gaming crowd couldn't be relied on too heavily to vote in any case...

You need to think creatively. I'm saying a bunch of those "Game Buses" parked outside voting places, loaded up with Halo. I wonder if it's too late to start a SuperPAC.

I'd also add in that the demographics of 18-35 that play Halo are primarily male. (Yes, some of us gals are going to be all over it as well, but we're a minority.) And of that 18-35 male demographic, they lean less heavily Dem than the females do (they trend toward Independent instead.)

So the effect will probably be a lot more minor than they're suspecting, because the women in the 18-35 demographic are the ones more motivated to vote to begin with, and the ones less likely to be camped out at Best Buy for a game.

I do think having a voting booth at Best Buy isn't a bad idea. Going to contact the county board of elections about that... Makes more sense than using a high school.

In Tennessee, our district voted in a church.

Sure, blame video games on low voting turnout. Not on the nominees.

2 centrist candidates I should be excited about; 2 partisan political machines backing them that diminish my enthusiasm greatly.

Same in my old district. Separation of church and state... Smiley: oyvey

It's just a building, unless there's some ordained minister preaching against a certain candidate I don't see there being any issue.

My polling place is in a church. Like Lolgaxe said, it's just a building for polling purposes. You've got to put them somewhere and your other likely places would be schools (an issue with classes in session and lots of people entering & leaving) or businesses which I think would be a greater conflict of interest than a church. What business wouldn't want a few hundred extra people stopping by that day?

Yeah, sometimes they use municipal buildings (fire/police stations, libraries, etc) but I don't think they're frequent enough or have ample enough parking to cover every voting precinct. There's a firehouse near me but it has a lot that fits maybe four cars.

Some of our hotels in smaller communities have had their meeting rooms used as voting locations. The free publicity was awesome.

I was kind of hoping that this whole kerfuffle would grow big enough to get the Obama re-election campaign's attention, leading them to create some silly, completely out-of-touch outreach effort to encourage gamers to "frag inequality", or something.

Come on, Axelrod. Don't disappoint.

Rec centers are used often as well, but those are often near/attached to schools as well, which brings up the same issues. Churches are just convenient because they tend to have large enough lots and aren't typically busy on a Tuesday.

I voted in a community center... and then worked as a scrutineer in a church polling station... I don't think it really matters.

Unless it's this church. Funny business going on here:

Quote:
Particularly outstanding is what went on in Polling Division 31, located in a church in Etobicoke. Eighty-six people voted by registration certificate on May 2, meaning they showed up without a voter identification card. Wrzesnewsky's lawyers claim that 68 of those voters actually lived in another polling division and should never have been allowed to vote at polling station 31. Lederer threw out 15 ballots in that polling division.

In another polling division in the riding, five voters who voted by registration certificate are listed as being crossed off the electors' list in another polling division, indicating they most likely did vote twice.

Source

It's not the church's fault, of course... it was some really sloppy or really corrupt election workers...

This is the first time I've ever seen an election result tossed out in Canada.

Tennessee only allows white non-Semitics to vote anyway so that makes sense.
