This is sort of interesting as it's so contrary to popular beliefs.

Apparently, the whole deal about women having a finite number of eggs might be a myth. Researchers have found stem cells in the ovaries that can generate new eggs.

There's little evidence to suggest that this could help women who are infertile, but what it could do is postpone menopause - indefinitely.

I think if women have to keep dealing with a monthly period well into their fifties and beyond, the suicide rate of old ladies will sky-rocket.

Does this mean that women could possibly reliably conceive and give birth well into old age? Wonderful. Let's just squeeze another sub-generation into the world population.

I heard about this on the radio.

What is promising about it isn't so much for old ladies, but for women who waited til early middle age to try to have kids and who are running out of time. There are too few eggs and too many of them are damaged beyond repair. However, if you can generate a fresh batch of eggs from healthy tissue, you can use that for in vitro fertilization instead of giving the woman a ton of hormones to make her super fecund and them harvesting them, only to dump 90% of the embryos because you made too many of them.

Actually, cue the anti-choicers to start declaring ovarian stem cells as pre-humans. Smiley: lol

I think it's fair to say the over-50 suicide rate would skyrocket and leave it at that. Actually we can probably expand it to include murder, as well.

Joph thought it would be funny the other day to tell our soon-to-be-teen that for his birthday he was getting another little brother. I don't who was more shocked, the birthday boy, or me. Motherhood at 35 is kicking my ass. At 50 I'll probably let this kid smoke pot in his room as long as he just leaves me the hell alone.

Also, I'm going to have a 15-year old at 50. Smiley: cry

If you're congratulating on the phantom baby, she's not pregnant.

Or else my urologist and I are going to have to have a chat.

They claim it can happen.

I recall my husband being instructed to return to the docs to give a semen sample a couple months after his snippy-surgery to insure all sperm pathways had been properly terminated.

I don't think he ever did it though. Smiley: clown

It can.

One of my good childhood friends got a new baby brother while we were in high-school. Mom had tubes removed (yes removed, not just tied) some 12 years prior. The doctor who did the surgery was a bit speechless when she faxed him a ultrasound photo. Smiley: lol
