Here's a new one of the SS getting a video of the comet Lovejoy. Only the first 45 seconds or so, the rest is the commander talking which I can't even hear at work.

Science! Smiley: schooled

It's an aurora, which is what appears when high energy particles generated from the sun collide with our magnetic field and are deflected off into space. Otherwise, they'd bombard earth, pretty much making life (at least as we understand it) impossible.

Kind of. It's where the magnetosphere gets stretched out away from the Sun (kind of like a comet's tail). Then it snaps back and you get the auroras where the high energy particles interfere with the upper atmosphere.

I really want to see them in person, I hear it's quite spectacular.

They're called Aurora Australis, in the southern hemisphere for the record. Boreal means northern in Greek or Latin and Austra means Southern. I think.

I never pegged you as such a ner-

...nevermind.

NNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD!

I stopped myself because I remembered two things. First, the reason either of us came to this website in the first place, and second, the conversations we've had that didn't involve boozed-up neovikings rampaging about for their own amusement.

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

Re my 3 year comment. I just checked the date of the email a buddy sent me. It was 3/20/2010. So I was off a few months. It sure seems like 3 years.

Still, that's a year and a half before this footage was taken.

I believe there's a different term below the equator but the maps put the US on top specifically so I don't have to know/care about those things.

Aurora Australis

Yes, we covered that last week. try to stay up with the rest of the class...

This week, we'll be learning about black holes, the original meaning behind the phrase "once you go black, you never go back".

Smiley: laugh

I don't know if that was real black hole humour or if it was purely accidental but very well done.
