Since Nil is from the UK and Xarus is from Canada, I think it's safe to say they are not Americans.

The obvious misspelling of the word was the hint that it was a joke. There isn't any reason why ANYONE shouldn't use Celsius. I was just giving the ignorant response that people like to make.

Isn't it some kind of Cold War remnant rubbish? Like "Dem Commies use SI, so we'll stick to Imperial".

The point was that the U.S should use the metric system, like every other developed country in the world. It wasn't meant to be taken literally. I always have to remind myself the conversion to Celsius, but that's because I'm from the U.S and we don't use Celsius.

Eh, they use it in scientific applications. For telling people in Cincinnati how cold it is outside, F works just as well (if not better) than C. It hasn't changed because there's no pressing reason to change it for casual use.

We use metric for everything. Do you guys teach imperial measurements as standard in schools? I mean, my parents grew up using Imperial measurements. They still know how to use Celsius for temperature. That being said though, in general we still use MPH, Feet and Inches, as well as Stones & lbs in every day life.

Also, aside from it being what you grew up using, I'm not entirely sure how you could argue that F makes more sense as a temperature scale than C. Water freezing at 0 and boiling at 100. Instead of...Freezing at 32 degrees and boiling at 212 degrees.

You're right though, one of the main reasons we use metric is because it's what we use for science. Having everything go nicely into 1000s is handy.

I think trying to change now would be a horrible idea. The damage is already done. However, we do use a hybrid of measurements that do include forms of the metric system as you stated.

I wouldn't say that it "makes more sense" but it has more units between freezing and boiling than Celsius without going into decimals. Particularly within the standard range most people care about -- outside temperature.

That's not to say it's "better". It serves its purpose though which is letting others know how hot/cold something is.

Why would trying to change now be any worse than trying to change at any other time?

Well, my emphasis was more so using the same measuring system that the rest of the world uses. I don't care about "trying to fit in", but the Metric system is at least "equally as effective", so it only makes more sense to me to use the Metric system.

Samira wrote:

"Now" was in reference to when people had become accustomed to our current measuring system. It isn't "now" as in "2012", but whenever society had fully integrated the current system.

Meh, we just round to the nearest whole number. At least, on the weather forecast. My car's outside thermometer shows temperature in .5 degree increments. Which is, y'know, nice.

Wasn't it Carter who started putting you guys on to metric, then just bailed on the idea?

These days the GOP would declare it "socialized European-style temperature reading" imposed upon them by Big Government and "academic elites" and wrap their Fahrenheit thermometers up in a protective US flag as they called AM radio stations to voice their shrill complaints.

Considering the limits people have of distinguishing incremental differences, I'm not sure having an integer point between 60°F and 62°F is all that useful to someone who just wants to know whether to wear a jacket, or arctic gear if you're a native Texan.

Did they abandon it before because it was a liberal pinko conspiracy? Then again with the wrapping of the Fahrenheit thermometers in flags and AM radio complaining.

Dem commies wanted you to have efficient units of measurement!

I imagine they abandoned it before because no one gave a fuck. I remember several points in my childhood when we were told this would be the year we all switched to metric for everything. I'm still driving at 35mph (getting 28 m/gal) to buy my 2"x4"s on a 68F spring day though.

In the UK it's a bit of a mess, if I'm honest. It was supposed to be all change in, '91, I think? Same deal, still mph, mpg. Although I believe that's more to do with older people's habit than anything else.

Petrol is sold by the litre, rather than the gallon. Wood is sold by the mm rather than the ".

Getting there, slowly but surely. It's a generational thing, I think.

My 3rd/4th/5th grade teachers during the Nixon/Ford years told us to learn it, as it would be the US standard system by.......1984. That went as planned, right?
