Underreacting to conditions and overreacting to them both translate to people that can't handle fairly common weather conditions.

The irony here is that the problems caused by rain in California isn't people overreacting to it, but failing to react sufficiently. They don't slow down enough during a first rain when the roads are slick, and they don't turn on their lights when visibility is low, and trust me, if we don't shut the roads down when they flood they will just plow right through the flooded roads and get stuck and/or swept off into a flood channel. It's often a lack of caution, and a general sense that a little rain can't possibly be dangerous that gets people in trouble in California. Because here, the roads do get very slick, and they aren't designed for good water flow and will flood.

We're really the opposite of panicky here. But go on with your little fantasy. It's amusing as hell.

Yeah, but it means y'all are morons then. Good enough for me.

So, you mean...

So it's not the snow and just that they can't drive in general?

Shit man, all you had to do was say "You're absolutely right, Joph. We can't drive for fuck around here and certainly not in any sort of mildly inclement weather any other part of the country shrugs off but which turns us all into complete idiots." I'm not sure why you beat around the bush for so long.

Was that so hard? Smiley: laugh

don't realize that the roads get really really slick when it rains for the first time in 6 months.

Ah, so you just can't drive in the rain and need to freak out. Well, rain is much more dangerous than an earthquake so that makes sense.

Go on now and get all defensive and tell just how dangerous this scary... "rain"... is

It's WATER. Falling from the SKY! /panic

For reals, though, the roads look like oil slicks when the rain starts in November or so. Well, that makes sense, as they are oil slicks for a few hours.

Yeah, the first rain after a dry period will bring the oil up to the top of the pavement and make it slick before the following rain washes it off.

Holy cats! You mean they sometimes have to drive on a road that's... slippery?

What a unique problem! I can see how that would scare and confuse everyone Smiley: grin

I have fun doing controlled fishtails when the three feet of snow turns the roads to ice. Smiley: dubious

Oh, you have no idea. Some people refuse to acknowledge that conditions have changed, and drive at their normal excessive speeds, while others slow down to a crawl. Add in some tule fog and oh, we got fun times.

So true. I blame that second hydrogen atom. Without it, water is just a nice jolly HO.

So... Which was worse, the hurricane or the earthquake? Good thing that water falling from the sky isn't a hazard like a big nasty earthquake! Smiley: lol

Most of a hurricane's damage comes from the wind. But it's good to know you're still butthurt about being trolled Smiley: laugh

Tell that to the people who's homes are being flooded and washed away. Most of the damage and deaths are caused by the water, not the wind. Sure, the wind contributes to storm surge along coastal areas, but that does not account for the rivers in areas 30+ miles inland flooding and swamping whole swaths of populated areas.

But you stick to your "earthquakes are so much worse!" theory there Joph. How much total property damage and death from the "once in 150 years" earthquake? And how much total property damage and death from the "once in 200 years" hurricane? Is anyone actually suggesting that the earthquake last week was worse than the hurricane this weekend? Cause that's pretty nutty.
