The crowd in IL booed parts of McCain's speech, but I think it was mostly the drunk college kids and in horribly poor taste. The speech was one of his best, natural and heartfelt. Even he couldn't help but be affected by the significance of the moment.

As for the end of the "honeymoon", he alludes to it in his speech.
Quote:
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

AUDIENCE: Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!

OBAMA: There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

How'd he do it?

He's a terrorist!

He's a socialist!

His pastor is racist and he wants to destroy Israel!!

He's not even a citizen!!

Was it Acorn?

Did the Democrats buy it with money?!

Stay tuned!

He only won by 150+ electoral votes or something. I just got off the phone with Knoxy and he says its actually McCain up by 20.

So, stay tuned indeed.

I mean he was the one who said that Obama had NO chance if he wasn't up by like 15 going into election day.

Gbaji and Smash on 310 or more electoral votes?

Haha, you left out the best part. 310 electoral votes FOR MCCAIN!

Remember when you suckers thought this was going to be close? If only someone had told you it wouldn't be. Oh wait.

You're correct, of course. But lets be fair. This was before the economic meltdown which practically handed Obama the win. Given that it was about a decade in the making, it was just dumb luck for Obama that it happened when it did, and if it hadn't the big issues would have all favored McCain.

I'll also admit that I was hoping (as you well know) that McCain would have made immigration a part of his campaign platform. He'd have done much better in the southwest. Might have lost some points in strong red states, but likely would not have changed the battleground numbers much as a result. Couple that with not having an economic disaster, and it very well could have been landslide the other direction.

But... That's not the way things went...

It's okay to just admit that Obama's team ran a far superior campaign.

The economic crash didn't hurt McCain nearly as much as McCain fumbling response to it and later refusal to speak about it for weeks while he instead concentrated on Ayers.

Probably not. The Palin pick was the big mistake, it's largely not in dispute. One could argue, I suppose that without here to energize the slack jawed base it would have been worse, but Mitt Romney looked pretty good about October 15th, didn't he?

Of course. Remember, I voted for Romney in the primaries anyway...

With McCain having won the nomination, Romney would have likely been a "yawn" VP pick though. In hindsight, his economic expertise would have helped the ticket, but it's still hard to say if any amount of brilliance on the part of any Republican ticket could have countered the overwhelming amount of blame placed on Republicans as a whole for the economy. I really feel that was the hole that McCain couldn't get out of no matter what he did about it.

At the risk of starting up an argument that's largely moot anyway, I wouldn't break my arm patting myself on the back. The Obama campaign made a large number of cringe-worthy mistakes which likely would have sunk just about any other candidate running at any other time.

He just had great media cover and 3x as much cash to spend. Any campaign will look great under those conditions.

If there's anyone I'm sure McCain wants to pop in the mouth, it's Steve Schmidt. Boy, did that guy fuck McCain over or what?

"Hey, Old Man, listen to this: First we spend a few months calling Obama a celebrity and ******** about his inexperience, right. Then we make this one broad your VP pick despite her lack of experience and hype up her crowd sizes, thus making our previous arguments obsolete. Who is she? Don't worry about that; you'll meet her for at least a half hour in a week or two, right before you declare her. And it won't matter anyway because we're not going to let the media speak to her -- that way we're sure there won't be anything negative reported about her. Brilliant, huh? By the way, we're going to need to cut your media access way back as well. No more of that 'free-wheeling press pool' on the planes crap. The media doesn't care.

So then, we ignore the economic crisis and we'll focus on attacking Obama for hanging out with some guy no one really remembers and who did some shit back in the '60s. If we can, we'll try to paint your rallies as melting pots of the ignorant and the racist -- people who get their political news via random chain e-mails. After a couple weeks of that and spending our whole advertising budget on negative ads thus destroying any remaining credibility you had as a bipartisan maverick (by the way, we're going to need to make that word into a joke by beating it into the ground with a rock), we'll top off the whole thing by hinging our entire economic plan around some schlub from Ohio, the word "socialist" and yelling about campaign finance reform.

What? Old Man, trust me on this. I used to work right under Karl Rove."

I'd be patting Obama, Axelrod & Plouffe on the back anyway.

Having 3x as much cash to spend was Brilliant Campaign Move #1. As I said -- a far superior campaign.

McCain largely shot himself in the foot with the media. By the end of September, most of the media, even folks who had previously been on excellent terms with the Senator, was wondering when McCain turned into Cranky Old Man.

If I had premium I'd link posts from people on this board parroting each and everyone of those points.
