So, I'm watching espn, trying to catch up on the week in sports, and they're been talking about some lame horse for 10 minutes. 2 questions: Who cares about horse racing, and if a champion horse breaks an ankle, do they still turn it into jello?

I heard about this horse for the first time today. I laughed when they said that in 28 years no horse had won the triple crown ( which is an upcoming event). I wondered what animal had won it then.

And no they would put the horse out to stud. Not a bad life if you ask me

the triple crown isn't 1 event, its 3. If you win the derby, the one today, and the one in a couple weeks, you win the triple crown. That is about the extent of my horse racing knowledge.

that they put them out to stud or that it wouldnt be a bad life?

I think that horses being put out to stud would be a bit overrated. I mean have you seen horses, they gotta be loose as hell.

Apparently, this horse won the Derby with a 6-length lead, which means that basically he stomped the competition. The race you're talking about is in Baltimore-The Preakness. He is the favorite to win.

If the leg won't heal they'll shot him :(

Horses don't do well with crutches.

Good Lord. I hadn't even read that. How sad. Poor horse. They said they had concerns about racing him so soon again after the Derby, seeing as he was used to longer resting periods... Smiley: frown

Horses are amazing athletes. It's tough when a high-level contender goes out like that.

Many people thought that if he had won the Preakness, he had a pretty decent shot at winning the Triple Crown at Belmont, which is a very rare feat indeed.

I kept misreading this thread title. Though it was going to be about the Jane Fonda movie.

Too bad about the horse though. I hate seeing them get hurt. Even in movies (like the battle scenes in Braveheart).

Whenever I watch a violent movie with a girl, they always freak out whenever an animal gets killed. People could be getting killed all over the place, even innocent ones or children, and they won't bat an eye.

But the minute somebody kills a horse or a puppy, they start bawling. It's very weird.

Apparently it was pretty heartbreaking to watch, because the horse was trying to race even with the broken leg. He wanted to run.

Hopefully the recovery after the surgery goes well. Even if he doesn't race again (which will be sad, because he seems to enjoy it) his owners will make MILLIONS putting him out to stud.

Even though it was just CGI, I cringed every time one of the oliphaunts in Return of the King stomped on one of the horses, or whenever one of the Nazgul's fell beasts picked them up and dropped them. My friend, however, found herself cringing whenever the oliphaunts were killed.

I found myself cringing at how the oliphaunts were killed. Legolas was just showing off at that point. Smiley: dubious

There's a scene in The Brothers Grimm where a horse is lifted in a sling for an effect, then dropped on its back but got up and trotted off. There was a furor made by PETA, and for the kitty pate scene, but that one was just an effect and didn't actually show it.

I think Eowyn cutting the hamstrings was worse for me. Or Eomer spearing the guy who fell off and starting swinging by a rein attached to the oliphaunt's ear. A few arrows to the brain is quick and painless, making the poor thing collapse upon itself, or yanking it's poor ear like that...owie.

Legolas surfing down the trunk, though, that was showing off. I half expected him to say, "Whoa!" after doing that little Keanu-esque head move.

I was one horse off a $4,780 Trifecta in that damn race. The horse I needed to get third, got fourth.

Both.

Gelatin comes from hooves and other tissue. Although they usually use cows or pigs anyway.
