Some useless information for you fine upstanding folks

Only 21 finalists remain in the final stretch of the public's selection of the new seven most noteworthy landmarks in the world, the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation has told Discovery News.

The goal of the project is to revise the original "seven ancient wonders of the world," since only one — the pyramids of Egypt — still exists today.

Well when we manage to leave the planet would we need to designate new landmarks?

That actually reminds me, Flea. One of my friends is heading to Peru in July for an archaeological dig and she's extending her stay in Peru. Any places of interest that you can recommend she should be touring?

Well, July is going to be miserable for her because it's the dead of Winter and Peru has no such thing as central heating, so bring lots of layers, lots of socks, and slippers to wear around the house because the dust mites will burrow in your feet. Also, if she takes any over-the-counter meds, take them with her, because some are not available that far South. She should avoid any flings with locals, because there is a whole profession built around snaring tourists.

As for places, Lima has many attractions, old churches, beaches and such but it will be cold and horrid. She should hit Cuzco and Ica, maybe Arequipa, but all of these involve travel on sometimes rickety local airlines and some significant time (in the case of Cuzco, 5 days is rushing it. You really need 9 or so.) How adventurous is she, and where in Peru is she headed?

I'm not sure which part of Peru, but the dig is for about a month beginning in July and I think she's planning to stay for another month. I think she wasn't planning to come back to the States until the beginning of September.

She's the type of person that doesn't mind not having an itinerary and I think as long as she has a list of possible places to visit, she'll just wing it.

Thanks though for the tip on layering, socks and slippers. I know she'll appreciate that.

Tell her to get her shots and head to the Manu wildlife preserve in the rainforest, and make sure to hit Cuzco, the Caballos de Paso (dancing horses) and pisco breweries in Ica, and the churches in Arequipa and Lima. She should also hop down to Puno, to see Lago Titicaca and visit the indians there on the floating cities. It's the lake with the highest elevation in the world, and the populations there are almost totally self-sustaining. You can stay with them in their homes, and their weaving is exquisite. Cajamarca is also pretty. Also, with any trip to the Andes/sierra region, warn her that she'll likely get viciously sick, unless she has a strong stomach. Suck on a lime, take your antacids and GI meds, and eat. The food is scrumptious.

Huancayo guinea pigs are tough as nails. Same for Cuzco ones. If you're gonna have them, only way is "Picante de Cuy", with hot pepper sauce over boiled taters. Go to Miraflores in Lima and find a good restaurant, and have some anticuchos. When you get back, I'll tell you what they are.

Now why the f[cyan][/cyan]uck is the eiffel tower on the list while the CN tower is not? It's not like the Eiffel Tower is a miracle of engineering, I'm not saying that the CN tower is a miracle of engineering, I'm just saying that it's more deserving of being on that list than the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel tower was built in 1889 and the CN tower was built in the 70's. I'd hazard a guess that it's on the wonder list because it's older. Plus, the Eiffel tower is much prettier to look at.

Well, to be fair, at the time the Eiffel Tower was a miracle of engineering. The CN Tower is just another big stick in the ground these days.
