I'm 26

I barely remember when it happened but I do remember teachers telling us about it and also reading about it throughout my school years. Guess it wasn't a big deal in Texas.

Well, part of the problem is that the (then) Soviet Union downplayed the level of the catastrophe and the ongoing danger - to the world as well as to its own citizens. When the cloud of radiation crossed over into Northern Europe the tenor of the news reports changed pretty dramatically.

Now, of course, they tend to try to downplay the continuing impact by keeping people well away from the hot zone. It was inevitable that these sorts of reports would start coming out eventually - too late for the millions of people sickened by radiation exposure, of course.

I was taught about Chernobyl in school, in moderate detail, but this was the first time that I have looked at it again since we had the baby and it is so much more horrific to me now. I can't even imagine how it must feel to have a child in that kind of condition, or even how they cope with it.

I was reading one of the sites about the firemen that were first sent in. They were told it was just a normal fire and just went in with hoses and cheap firecoats. Says they were smoked within seconds of approaching the leak.

I tell you what, if I am driving into a fire with green lights eminating, my service to state and country ends when I jump, tuck & roll off the damn truck.

Probably would have been better all around if they hadn't tried to put out the fire with water, anyway.

But that's not the point - those men were sent in there with no idea what they were facing. That's just murderous.

The horror of dealing with the results of radiation exposure and how it manifests itself, particularly on a cellular level i/e the massive birth deformities, has got to be a burden most people cannot bear. Having a child born with a brain outside its skull, or its kidneys outside its body would require round the clock attention, not to mention the psychiatric damage to everyone involved.

Sadly it seems the only solution in the Ukraine, is to hand the children over to the state, which eventually warehouses them in various mental institutions.

And Molish there are even more Nuclear power plants near the Chicagoland region. There is one in Michigan City, Indiana and one near Bridgman, Michigan, both are situated near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Exactly! Also, the folks that were working during the shift that the meltdown occured were put in jail! Some guy got 14 years but died 3 months later of radiation poisoning.

We learned about it in school and also watched a movie called "China Syndrome", I think was the name of it. The movie wasn't directly related to Chernobyl but it gave you idea of what would happen in the US.

I was also reading more about it on Wiki today. Looks like there are plans to rebuild a containment shield but when it will take effect is still unknown.

pffftt! just because some dude didn't hit the switch and one of the cores overheated almost going critical and burring it's way underground till it hit ground water and cause a massive radioactive geyser that surely would have killed us all.

dosen't mean we shouldnt cut him some slack, I'm fairly sure he probably still works there.

...or he is dead. I think that I read on one of the links that every employee of the plant was arrested, no matter what role they had in the plant. Most of them died within weeks of being jailed.

Wouldnt that suck? Your the janitor or something, then all of a sudden BAM! Your arrested for blowing the plant up and killing thousands of people. I'd protest...
#47 Apr 26 2006 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
hmmm.. I'm not sure on that one. after it was all said and done I believe one a farts worth of radioactive gas was released. what happened to the employees is unknown to me. tossing them all in jail seems very unlikely as it was a accident and not a deliberate action. or if they were, they were most likely not kept very long.

Odd. I'm 26 also, and clearly remember hearing about Chernobyl meltdown. Not from school, though - why would they bother to teach six-year olds about world events? You probably had classmates who couldn't tie their shoes or maintain control of their bladder; schools tend to shoot for the lowest common denominator.

Either that or they're both mildly retarded and using the internets.
