30 years ago, two protestors attempted to burn an American flag in the outfield during a game at Dodger Stadium. The Cubs centerfielder, Rick Monday, ran over and snatched the flag away before they could do it.
Now, I have no problem with him grabbing it away, as they had no right to be there, and it was a stupid place to protest anyway, but people act like the guy single-handedly defeated Hitler, saved the Lindbergh Baby, and cured smallpox.
Quote:
"But what he did for his country, he will be remembered for the rest of his life as an American hero."
Not to mention, the guy is pretty clueless about the concept of flag burning as a protest:
Monday wrote:
"What those people were doing, and their concept of what they were trying to do was wrong.

Whatever their protest was about, what they were attempting to do to the flag -- which represents a lot of rights and freedoms that we all have -- was wrong for a lot of reasons. Not only does it desecrate the flag, but it also desecrates the effort and the lives that have been laid down to protect those rights and freedoms for all of us."

The flag is burned to protest the people in power desecrating the effort and lives that were laid down, via their abuse of power and removal of freedoms.
