Any advice or insight would be most appreciated.

A close female friend of mine lives in a house with 4 roomates, each on a lease. Recently one of the roomates has become irrationally hostile and passive aggresive.. such as slaming doors and hypocritically complaining about the most insubstantial things....
it seems like she is just finding things.. any little thing to cause drama... I could go of with a list of things.. but I'm sure you get the idea.

Finally it came to be known that this roomate has accused my friend of "trying to be her" (this is laughable) due to the fact that she got her hair cut short and bought a new purse... or somthing crazy... and now the hostility has gotten to a point where EVERY OTHER roomate has begun sleeping with their rooms locked with knives on thier bed-stands out of fear of the utterly delusional and irrational state that this roomate seems to be in.

Now all of the other roomates are in agreeance that this girl is Out of her MIND...

Oh yeah.. a FORMER roomate had moved out before.. suppposedly for the same reason of this one person being psycho..

So waht can they do? They all have seperate leases... and my friend is talking about finding a new place to live.... to which I say FU[cyan][/cyan]CK THAT, it's the crazy one that everyone hates that should leave!

Can the landlord legally just kick her out? I realize that even though all the roomates want her out.. that it's not a democracy.

It depends on what it says in the lease. If there is a set term in the lease, the landlord can't just terminate the lease without any cause. If the psycho isn't paying her rent or is doing something else that violates the lease terms, the landlord will have cause to either terminate the lease or give her a chance to redeem herself.

If the lease is a month to month (also called a 30 day lease), then the landlord can usually just give a 30 or 60 day notice for the roommate to move, depending on how long the roommate has lived there (I'm analyzing this under California law). The other roommates can go to the landlord and explain the situation and give reasons why the other roommate has to go. Usually a Landlord will be willing to kick out the bad tenant in order to keep the good tenants.

Last scenario, if the roommate goes psycho and I mean psycho where the other roommates are in fear, call the cops and get a restraining order. If there's a restaining order, the roommate may be forced to leave the premises for awhile, but it's only a short term solution.

Hope things work out peacefully for your friend.

I think they should go on the preemptive crazy strike and snuff the psychotic one.

There's a lot of corn out there. Shovels are cheap.

I wouldn't be surprised that the 3 sane ones could approach the landlord and state that they are all terminating lease because of the psycho-hose-beast. logically, I assume the landlord would offer to terminate the single psycho then loose 3 others.

Have you considered following around the psychotic room-mate, mimicking her every move and gesture, echoing every word she says and sound she makes?

Be her shadow.

Enjoy.

Yeah, you know, the problem with trying to manipulate crazy people is that... well, they're crazy.

Far, far easier and healthier to move out, no hard feelings, no, I didn't take your CD, have a good life, bye-bye for now!

Hey! Quick question. Does the current crazy roomate have the same room as the former crazy roomate?

Have you checked to make sure the house isn't on an old Indian burial ground or something? Maybe there was a murder in that room? Maybe it's a conjunction of magical conflugences or something silly sounding like that?

Might be easier to get out of the lease at least... ;)

Have you ever seen the Friends episode where Chandler just empties his wierd new roomate's things out of the room and claims he's never seen him before? Well, with 3 people, getting her stuff out shouldn't take all that long.

Most leases should be set up this way, and with good cause. If the landlord didn't put a termination clause into the lease then that's just asking for trouble.

I have a friend who owns her own condo and she leases out the other bedrooms to make some extra cash. She's had to terminate leases before.

On a side note, what the fuck is wrong with those people?

Really love ideas / stories like this. This one office a friend of mine worked at pulled a pretty evil prank on one of the mid-management types that just managed to get a real office and had gone on vacation.

Apparantly they had gotten the idea from some source, tv, internet - hell if I know - but after she went on vacation they removed the door and outer frame and then drywalled and painted over where her door was, placed some generic office furniture in the area and then pretended like no one knew who she was when she returned. From the way the story was told she really felt like she had lost it - rather evil but very funny imo.

Anyway, I vote for this idea, especially if you can get someone else believably moved in at the sametime. Like have it look like they've been there forever with their food in the fridge, things on the wall, maybe stage a photo that appears to be from sometime ago - remember to set the date on the camera for a year or two ago, possibly change a fixture in the room like adding a ceiling fan (not to exspensive at most hardware stores) and other such things. If shes already psycho you could probably drive her out pretty easily.

If there isn't any part of the lease that mentiones harrasment or anything like that. Then, have them get a restraining order, more than likely she will be forced to leave with a court order.

I hope everything goes well..:/

I wanted to add..if the roommate just all of sudden acting like this when she didnt before, it might be a medical problem seriously. Maybe she is on meds and didnt take them or something. If its that bad where they have to keep knives with them while them sleep, call the cops before she does something to hurt someone.

So far she has written a very extensive letter to the landlord about the whole thing.

Now the girl has begun being openly rude and passive/agressive, such as "taking over" the living room with her b/f during a time wehn she KNOWS that my friend's "show" comes on... a comprimise had been made in the past for them to allow each other access to the main TV for their favoutite shows..
also things like leaving her door cracked just so she can slam it shut wehn my friend walks by the room. At this point it is clear cut blatant BULLYING.

At the place where my dad lives, there used to be a real psycho.

Seriously, the guy owned a bird who he just let go crazy... you can still smell the p[Aqua][/Aqua]iss stains of the bird in one corner. The guy started to steal items owned by the couple who lived in the other half of the house over something dumb. Tensions only grew from there. The couple called the cops a few times, but there was nothing the police could do for some odd reason.

This guy was absolutely insane. The girl part of the couple would be alone in the house, right? Well, the psycho would stalk her from room to room in the other side of the house. In other words, she would be in the bathroom, he would be in the room adjacent, behind the wall. She would leave the bathroom and go downstairs to the living room, he would follow down the stairs on his half and go to the room adjacent to the living room. Crazy.

Get this. The guy purposely went to the gas grill that the couple owned outside, turned it on, and left it running. If someone had so much as smoked a cigarrette, the house would've been in flames.

The situation was ended when the nut was arrested for arson. He had also stolen a good amount of stuff from the college he worked at.

The worst part of the story is that the landlord did absolutely nothing. Smiley: oyvey She kept tried to help out the psycho instead of the couple. Go figure.
