WARSAW, Poland -- Two swans in Poland have tested positive for the deadly strain of bird flu, the first cases to be found in the country, an official said Monday.

"Both birds had the H5N1 strain of bird flu," said Tadeusz Wijaszka, the director of the National Veterinary Research Institute in Pulawy, where the tests were conducted.

The wild swans were found dead Thursday in Torun, about 120 miles northwest of Warsaw.

Among the other European countries that have confirmed cases of the deadly H5N1 strain are Poland's western and eastern neighbors, Germany and Ukraine.

As an avid reader of James Michener, one of my favoUrite modern books is his "Poland".

Since I read that I've been fascinated with the history of Poland, and before I die, I intend to visit Carcow and hear the bugler silenced half way through the Hejnal. One of the most romantic historical stories I know.

I feel I'd be getting the short end of the ethnic stick.

Well in that case, here's another thing that has nothing that day or some flu.

Close to where I grew up there is a bar named "Pulaski's" right on mainstreet in downtown. It's always been a bit of a dive and not exactly know for it's top notch patrons. Over time, for some strange reason, a group of what were considered to be the 'bunnies' in high school made it their local watering hole after coming of age. Of course, being the **** hole that it is there were still plenty of dirt rollers hanging about as it was their watering hole as well.

One day, apparently some of the scumbags got into a spat with the ex-football stars and it resulted in scuffle in the parking lot. Lord knows it certainly wasnt' the first fight to roll out of that bar and most definitely not the last, but on this occasion one of the participants was a particularly nasty summabitch.

Damon Morgan was his name(I think he's Polish btw). I grew up in the same town as he did. He was a few years older than I and we had a few mutual acquaintances. He was in and out of juvi and spent some time in jail when he was a bit older. Crazy ******* he was, and he did a lot of drugs.

At any rate, during this fight Damon pulled a knife and shanked two of the bunnies, killing one of them I think. Now this might not seem like a big deal to some of you, especially the Polish guy that lives in Chicago where bunnies get killed all the time, but 'round these parts bunnies dont' just get stabbed.

Moral of the story:

Don't trust Polish guys with blonde hair and crazy eyes, they'll probably stab your bunnies. And don't go to Pulaski's.
