Motown finds some new life by reviving its monster hits of the motorway.

Detroit, desperate for a few hits, is driving in a new direction: back to its glory days, when its swaggering sedans and pumped-up muscle cars were the monsters of the motorway.

Detroit has decided the revive the classic days of American automotive design. Instead of focusing on how aerodynamic, and how many different models can use 95% of the same parts, they are focusing on making cars that stand out again.

What do you think? Is this progression in car design? Would you rather have a unique garish car that stands out in the parking lot, even if it means a heftier price tag and fuel bill, or do you tend to opt for the fuel efficent, streamlined bubblemobiles that you need to check the emblem on the trunk in order to know who made it?

I think Ontario is just across the pond and Car makes don't have to pay for employee healthcare.

Outsourcing makes me happy!

Personally I love these cars. I agree that they are probably wasting gas but then so are all the people who drive alone in their suv's to work and I doubt most people would use these as their daily drivers.

On the other hand, I still can't figure out why car manufacturers can't seem to make low mpg nice-looking cars. I think i saw the first hybrid car I would actually drive at the auto show, a Lexus GS450h.

I only like it if it gives me a chance to buy a car that looks just like the 1969 Chevy Camaro, but has all the technology of newer cars such as tighter allowances, more robust and consistent materials and safety considerations.

Why not have both?

An Insight and a Prius both stand out in a parking lot.

I certainly wouldn't dump the Insight into the bubblemobile group. I think the Insight really stands out from a design perspective. But I get your point.

Don't get me wrong I don't think all fuel effiecient cars are bubblemobiles, it just seems like manufacturers threw design out the window sometime in the mid nineties along with everything that gives a car it's identity. Innovation was discarded in favor of conformity. I'm glad to see some form of commitment from the auto manufactures to bringing uniqueness back to their cars.

Mehh. Classic Yanqui self-delusion.

You know that your auto industry is inherently French, right?

Think about it.

Detroit (French name)
Chevrolet (French name)
Cadillac (French name)
Buick (French name)

Damned cheese eating surrender monkeys!

Honda Civic Si
23/32 mpg

Honda S2000
20/26 mpg.

Acura RSX
23/31 mpg.

Ford Focus ZX3
I think it looks good but I think the 4 door sedans look much better, and have more fuctionality than the hatchbacks, be eh different strokes for different folks.
26/34 mpg.

Mazda Miata
24/30 mpg.

Just to name a few. They are great looking cars that are fairly gas friendly. Ofcourse though they are not going to be 8-cylinders either.

You mention Ford Focus as a good looking car, and I think it is just another one of those that looks like all others. In fact, it used to look unique, though ugly and alien-like in my opinion. I used to have a red 2003. I purchased a silver 2005, and with the new body style they look just like everyone elses car.

I should have bought a mini cooper....that is what I really wanted. Oh well.

Maybe Detroit will focus on Mechs in the near future. That would be kind of robocopish, would that make you happy? Cause you can sure as hell bet they won't be fuel efficient.
