The problem, gbaji, was that she was already going the same speed, if not faster than us. She waited until there were no lines left and the lanes were merged to decide that she needed to get over. It's not like on ramp ends abrubtly... she had plenty of time to get behind or in front of us, and she didn't.

Yeah. Sometimes, there isn't much you can do. In that situation though, I'd just make sure there was a couple car lengths between me and the car in front of me. If the person driving the car on the onramp is smart, they'll see that gap and get into it. If that person is an idiot and insists on getting right next to you instead, then you've given yourself room to accelerate forward in order to create a gap *behind* you (which is now right next to where the merging car is).

That's just how I do it, and it works at avoiding most idiot drivers. That's not to say that a really determined idiot can't manage to ***** it up anyway, but at least *most* people on the road, idiot or not, will take an open spot in a lane if you give it to them. They don't want to get stuck next to you, they just may have their mind set on getting in front or behind you and end up that way. You can't guess what's going on in the mind of the other driver, but you can at least avoid the most obvious things.
