i cant even begine to say how friggin messed up this country is.

my 3rd graders math. "estamating". OMFG. when she should be learning how to SOLVE problems, she is learning to round the numbers to their nearest "10", then do quick "estimating" to find the "closest" answer.

why?

FCAT.

instead of teaching kids how to SOLVE problems, they are teaching them how to find a CLOSE answer so they can zip through multiple guess questions on a standardized test.

this is friggin ABSURD. ************** STUPID.

this is the stupid friggin bastardized moral majority working for you.

we are teaching our kids to make close guesses in school. not find answers, not solve problems, but find something "close".

try and raise a scientest with that mentality. this country is FRECKED UP.

well, back to homework and helping my kid become BRAINDEAD....

Wait til your daughter gets to High school, middle even! They teach kids rounding so that we don't have to right down answers like "345.083442021940238357383020394820" And when she makes it to Algebra, she will be solving equations. Hard equations... *looks at his home work and sets it on fire* Lets just hope shes better at it than me...

--------------------------------------------

that is what is pissing me off to no end.

if she spends her learning time in math class in school learning how to make GUESSES, there is no friggin way in hell she will be ready for high school.

absolute STUPIDITY. why not toss in creationism as science to boot, and we can all become a bunch of pod people, while the rest of the world watches us from behind glass panals during viewing hours at the zoo..

how ANY PARENT copuld support this UTTER STUPIDITY is beyond me.

/takes deep breaths from a brown paper bag and mutters to himself....only 2 more years to go....only two more years to go.....

people its way past time for a revolution in this country. unless this bunch of idiots actually does represent the majority, then, God help us.

there not getting my kids. ill hire full time tutors if i have to. the rest of you who cant afford to? stand up and be counted. ill fall in line with you to end this stupidity. or quietly go back to sticking your head in the sand, and ill just take care of mine. whichever.

So I suppose when you're directing planes and you tell a pilot to climb 500 feet, it's because you calculated that as the exact proper altitude, and not 499.5 feet or 503.72 feet. Right?

#13 Feb 02 2006 at 5:38 PM Rating: Default
i got the point.

there is a big differnace between rounding the product of a problem to end a long chain, than rounding the numbers BEFORE you try finding the product.

in one, you actually sove the problem and detgermin a point to end, in the other, you DONT SOLVE ANYTHING, you just make a close guess so you can recognize an answer on a multiple guess standardized test WITHOUT solving the problem.

we are teaching our kids to cheat. to find shortcuts. to bypass the problem for the easy answer. kind of like Bush and Iraq.

we are teaching our kids to be IDIOTS.

dumbfounded. thats all i can say. just dumbfounded.

yep. just the way when you make change at your job at burger king you give them one dollar and 50 cents because you figured it is the exact amount needed instead of one dollar and 49.98623 cents.

btw, if we ever issue a clearance for an aircraft to climb 500 feet, it would be because we had already messed up big time. standard altitude seperation is 1000 feet unless you are flying under visual flight rules, then you are not being given controll instructions by an airtraffic controller.

But, in third grade they teach you how to do it with whole numbers because its harder for small kids to comprehend fractions and decimals, I think your being far to critical of the school, lighten up, trust me, it'll only get worse when she comes home with her first algebraic equation.

So who's stuck at work today? If the office busy? What are you doing tonight to celebrate? Where are you taking your loved ones? Did you buy any special presents for the day? What kind of presents did you get? What does your Groundhog Day tree look like? Does it bother you when people refer to it as an Early February Spring Forecasting Conifer? Would you boycott Target for saying so? Did you hide your Groundhog Day candy out in the yard for the groundhogs to find? What are you dressed up as this year? Have you had a moment of silence for our fallen groundhogs?

Whew! So much to talk about on this special day!

Um... Not to be obvious or anything, but the vast majority of school programs are designed by Democrats. So... You're the parent supporting this utter stupidity.

If the Republicans had their way, all education would be paid by school vouchers with all schools being private schools competing for those vouchers instead of the monolithic and craptastic public school system we have today.

How many private schools do you think are teaching 3rd graders how to guess accurately on tests required for public schools? Not many...

Way to support what you hate. If you're lucky, in 2 more years another Republican will win the presidency, and (more importantly) they'll keep control of both houses in Congress, and then *maybe* they'll be able to reverse the damage that 30-40 years of Democrat control in those houses has caused to the public education system.

I'm serious here. It's almost comical when I hear this (actually, no "almost" about it). Everyone knows that if you want a better education for you kids, you send them to private school. You've got the Democrats wanting everyone to attend public school, and the Republicans trying to make it so that more (or everyone) can attend private schools. So... Who are you blaming for poor education? The party that created the current mess in our public schools and has worked hard to make sure that most families can't afford to send their kids anywhere else? Or the party that's trying to make it so your kids can attend better schools? Wow. You R smart!

If it really matters that much to you, vote Republican in the next set of elections. Demand school vouchers. Demand privatization of the school system. That's the best solution and the only way your child will get more then a substandard education on the public's dime.

He has a point though - He lives in Florida (evident by "Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test) which is rather high for educational standards in the U.S. compared to say Arizona which is 50 on a list of 50 states...

Hmmm and people wonder why I choose to go to a charter school when we moved to AZ (from Florida btw Smiley: tongue) instead of the public schools. I'm just glad I'm done with all the high school BS where science is taught like this: "this is a rule - there is no explanation, it just is - accept it or fail!"

I ccan't imagine a class like that. My high school had good explainations for every rule in the classes I took at least.

We once had the physics teacher derail an entire class to just discuss the nature of gravity...

No, Nobby is waiting for someone to acknowledge his clever "Groundhog Day" bit where he keeps repeating the same post over and over.*

I suppose it's a step up from blank posts.

*Yes, I know this de facto acknowledges it
