I don't think anything you have ever done has offended me, but that flag is a first. Nice work.

As an ignorant hick, I don't even know what the upside-down flag is supposed to signify. I know what half-mast means, but that's all...

Flying the flag upside down is either used in extreme cases to signal danger or distress, or as a quite major insult against the nation in question. For example, during WWII soldiers at allied bases overrun by japenese who were being used to set an ambush would warn off returning aircraft by raising the flag upside down. In this instance I don't know what the hell smash is getting at but it is irritating me too.

What about flags that are the same right side up as upside down?

For example, take Japan's flag. It looks the same upside down and right side up.

I think he's asking what you do if you live in, say, Japan and your flag looks identical no matter which way you fly it.

The American flag is flown upside down when the country is in grave danger, which is the point that Smash is trying to make. In an extreme national crisis Congress would authorize the flying of the flag in an upside down manner as a visual indicator and warning to US citizens that extreme circumstances require extreme measures.

I don't take umbrage at him using it, except that had he been posting here during Clinton's reign, it should have been flown upside down and at half mast.

And, btw, the use of an upside down flag is, as far as I know, unique to the United States.
