What they moved the Mason-Dixon Line on us???

Actualy only the fact that Wash. D.C. is south of Most of Maryland kept the state from Joining the South. That and the fact that They were able to delay any vote by Maryland long enough to make it moot. I'm too tired to go into the detail of Maryland history in the Civil War, but Jonwin can give ya a detail lecture if you want one. Ok, he says we wouldn't have seceded, but I'm a Yankee transplant so what would I know?

As to Rt 32 the extra lane for the most part is done ands means only another lane for cars to fill. Maryland has now worst traffic then California. Long are the days when you could go on a nice drive in the country along Rt. 32.

Baltimore's population in 1860 made it the 3rd largest city in the country and it had the largest free black population. It was the largest and most industrialzed city in the South. It was, and is, the east coast RR hub of the country.
While southern in tradition and heritage Md's economic ties were with the North. With the cash crops being wheat, the number of slaves in Md. had been decreasing every year sinc the 1830's. Thats why the legislature in April of 1861 never voted on secession. They actually stated in a resolution that the legislature had no authority to consider seccession.
There werent enough pro seccession folks in the legislature to force a vote.
(Of course the presence of 22 regiments along the Md/Pa border aka the Mason-Dixon line may have had some influnence.)

Yes the city was occupied on May 13 1861 and remained so until the end of the war.
