ok i heard today from friend at work that gas prices had risen (i live in a dugeon and leave onece a day to go to work). Also taxes for grorcies are apperently going to go up too. All so that we can use our hard earned money to pay for the rebuilding of Iraq. Dont know how much of this is true but if it is true i am finding it to complete BS. We have problems controlling welfare in our own coutnry now we take it global? As i recall i didnt see ne Iraqs tring to help us out after 911 and our reason for going there in the frist place was too try to keep a sequal of 911 from happing. As i see it weve done that now lets treat Iraq as we did Germany in WWII. Leave a few countires milltary presnet and keep them from haveing a milltary of there own for near 100 years. It worked out fine then, and Germany has become a great country because of it (in some ways better than America.)
But if i am wrong about the tax increase plz some one correct me and disregrad the post.

You're wrong. There is no grocery tax. The tax on fuel hasn't changed - it's still the lowest in the world.

Actually there's lots of countries with lower fuel taxes and prices. Where do you get this stuff?

Federal taxes on gasoline are pretty low. Probably not the "lowest in the world", but we do get gas very cheap.

It's the state and local taxes and additional requirements that drive up the cost at the pump. The reason Californians pays so much at the pump is because we passed all these additional clean air bills that require special additives to be added to the fuel, thus increasing the cost (and creating a demand problem since quantities of fuel to have the additive added have to be parcelled out ahead of time to keep the fuel cost effective nationwide).

Aside from the reasons Gbaji stated, cities also tack additional taxes onto gas prices to pay for a variety of things.

This is also true for alcohol, resturaunt food, tobacco and other "sin" or "luxury" items.

There are also many state which apply sales taxes to groceries. California is one state that does not.

However Taxes going up seem to be an inevatability. Iraq is just an excuse. Even if it is a "temporary tax" our children and grandchildren will probably still be paying it long after we are dead.

For our esteemed government seems to think is knows how to spend your money better than you do.

Almost afraid to ask the question, but how many here would be in favor of a Flat rate income tax?

I'll admit I don't know our tax structure well enough to weigh in on the flat tax vs. progressive tax debate.

No, you wouldn't. The Republican party machine would develop some assanine propaganda explaining how flat taxes were evil and you'd swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

That depends on what we're talking about when we say "flat tax".

Is it: "Everyone pays X percent of their income regardless of source and regardless of their income level".

or: "The normal deductions and tax credits exist, and everyone pays the same percentage based on the resulting taxible income regardless of what that income comes out to".

There's a huge difference between those two, mainly as it affects support for dependants, tax assistance for education, tax breaks for investments, credits for property purchases, and tons of other things that people want/need in their tax structure.

I think most republicans would agree to the second. After all, if you make more then 28k a year (average salary, correct?), your tax rate is in the top half, so you'd pay less in taxes as a result of a flat tax applied. There's a lot of debate on this, and it boils down to at what point in the code you apply the "flat tax".

I'd love flat tax, if it were flat across the board, no deductions at all. That would make it possible to have it low and managable for everyone.
